Since its inception, Kuboraum has been shaping a vibrant community of people through countless events, collaborations, shared experiences, and art residencies. It is exactly this community of people, distinguished by its own values, culture, and aesthetics, that in turn shaped the project itself, allowing it to flourish and evolve genuinely.

The Kuboraum Sound Residency was born out of the desire to narrate an inclusive and diverse aesthetic through collaborations with artists from the contemporary experimental music panorama. Free from genre constraints, as a stylistic and political choice, it navigates through the spectrum of sound to demonstrate that very different artists, offering completely different genres, can organically cohabitate and enter a fluid dialogue with each other.

When listening to the compilation, the feeling will be that of listening to an album, where each contribution is not on its own but exists in relation to all the others. This project ultimately aims at creating new paths for those who keep their ears and minds open.

Kuboraum announces a series of ''Digital Sound Residency’’ beginning with Ziúr.

After a long time collaboration with the independent electronic music scene, Kuboraum is happy to launch their Digital Sound Residency, inviting experimental, electronic and contemporary music artists  to re-design their aesthetic through sound. 

First host of the series is the Berlin-based artist and producer Ziúr.

Ziúr’s music has always been difficult to classify. A longtime fixture in Berlin’s nightlife, the musician, producer and DJ has cut through decades of threads to arrive on a sound that accurately represents her journey. She approaches electronic music without any preciousness or reverence to genre.

Ziúr’s music has always been difficult to classify. A longtime fixture in Berlin’s nightlife, the musician, producer and DJ has cut through decades of threads to arrive on a sound that accurately represents her journey. She’s sung, played guitar and drums and reduced club music to a burning cinder; with “Antifate”, her third album under the Ziúr moniker, she approaches electronic music without any preciousness or reverence to genre. 

2019’s acclaimed “ATØ” re-introduced songs to her canon, contorting her vocals over an undulating electronic backdrop. On “Antifate”, she takes this idea further, pushing abstracted pop forms into mists of digital euphoria and extracting unexpected instrumental flourishes from collapsing clouds of distorted rhythm. Electronic instru- mentation is melted into acoustic sounds and vice-versa, creating a breathing organic universe that’s entirely Ziúr’s.

The second host of this series is the pioneer of the Birmingham electronic music scene, the man behind several projects which changed the electronic music scene, the Downwards founder, artist and producer REGIS.

LET LOVE DECIDE, written by REGIS, is an extract from the one-off performance LET THE NIGHT RETURN by Karl O’Connor aka REGIS which took place in June 2019 at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus in Peloponnese - Greece. 
A remarkable UNESCO world heritage site devoted to Asclepius - the Greek god of medicine. The 2,360-year-old, 14.000 capacity open-air Auditorium which is still standing in its original form and shape, as the oldest and last remaining blueprint of architectural acoustics, naturally became the ideal setting for the act. 
In LET LOVE DECIDE Regis is shifting between his signature acoustics old and new, designing a huge spectrum of his deep personality while using his incredible cult voice.

REGIS _ KUBORAUM _ LET LOVE DECIDE

Kuboraum presents the third episode of its Digital Sound Residency inviting the legendary Mike Paradinas, otherwise known as μ-Ziq, founder of the label Planet Mu and leading voice in the British electronic music over the last 25 years. 

In μ-Ziq’s own music, a sharp sound synthesis melts into melodic arrangements mixed with infectious rhythms and a passion for far-reaching, yet accessible experimentalism. 
From hardcore and breakcore to spacey, moody sounds of dubstep, he is devoted to progressive sounds that generate an effect on society in the way we perceive and dance music – while being at the same time influenced by society. In an attempt to tap into the inner soul of the listener, μ-Ziq elevates techno above the mere functionalism of the dancefloor, lighting fires in the heart and painting pictures for the mind’s eye.

In the pre-Planet Mu days, Paradinas collaborated with Aphex Twin on Expert Knob Twiddlers, a joint album issued in 1994 under the name Mike & Rich. Part of the same ecosystem, the two IDM pioneers were trying to create an electronic music that the UK could be proud of, rather than just making pure dancefloor tracks or Detroit techno facsimiles.

In 1998, Paradinas launched his own independent record label Planet Mu and started releasing material by ground-breaking artists as Jega, Venetian Snares, Vex’d, Luke Vibert and FaltyDL, including some of his own projects ‘Kid Spatula’ & the ‘Slag Boom Van Loon’ collaboration with Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J). Since then, despite seismic industry shifts and musical evolutions, he never lost his crucial position at the fringes of electronic music—from IDM to dubstep, grime to footwork. With over 400 releases, Planet Mu has become established as one of the mainstays of the electronic music scene, alongside Ninjatune and Warp, being always innovative and forward-thinking.

μ-ZIQ_ KUBORAUM_ SPELM

The 4th act of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency presents Salò’s ‘La Ballata delle Mosche’. 
 
Springing from the Pasolinian macrocosm, Salò’s anthology is based on dualities: finding pleasure in the decadent, on literature and perversion, eternity and situationism, the grotesque and the visionary, fantasy and reality, the baroque and the contemporary, critique and provocation. All these juxtaposed elements come together in an allusive, murky imagery and open performative dimension which deny any form of canonicity or morality. Salo’s boundary-rejecting performances act as a medium to translate dualities into ritual practice and open a window in this performative landscape, combining psychedelic scenarios and mythological symbolism, rituality and rural iconography made of fairy tales, dreams and hypnotic scenes. 
A synaesthesia of noise music, esoteric atmospheres, baroque costumes and performance. Different artistic levels intersecting in a moment of collective creativity, which does not follow a specific path but stems from the holistic combination of different sounds.

SALÒ - La Ballata Delle Mosche

The 5th act of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency presents <3less by Space Afrika, a delicately collaged soundscape spanning time, consciousness and genre.

The duo composed by producers Joshua Inyang and Joshua Tarelle made its name with dub techno-soaked sonic impressions of the grey streets and distinct voices of their hometown, Manchester.  As sonic painters, they portray visual stories in the listeners’ minds: rich emotional landscapes translated into contemplative, weightless sound collages. Oblique mosaics of dialogue, rhythm, texture, and shadow leaning into an enigmatic fusion of smoky dub, alchemize ambient and cosmic downtempo. Genre-spanning emotive electronic music rooted in everyday life and real-world experiences, allowing the listener to empathize and see the world through the artist’s eyes, just as they see it. 

Space Afrika started their career with minimal and dub techno productions. Their first albums Above The Concrete/BelowThe Concrete (2014) and  Somewhere Decent To Live (2018) were sparse yet intimate, paying tribute to the landscape of their home city, but also expressing a desire to escape its sometimes depressing disintegration. In 2020, they released the mixtape hybtwibt?, a powerful exploration of black consciousness through an assemblage of conversations, news reportage, r&b samples and ambience. Their third album "Honest Labour", featured as best album of 2021 in Pitchfork, Guardian and The Wire Magazine to name a few, is a 19-track collection of crepuscular moods and beautifully liquid washes of sound. A delicately created vulnerable sonic tapestry, almost entirely organic yet with a binding hint to something more cosmic in the air.

SPACE AFRIKA  <3less

Kuboraum presents the 6th act of the Digital Sound Residency featuring Impressioni Dinamiche, a mind-expanding piece by Mannequin Records label boss and curator Alessandro Adriani, one of our absolute favorite producers.

Travelling between light and dark, Adriani depicts a suspended sound imaginarium governed by its own rules and principles of gravity: obscure space-like atmospheres blending elements of techno, electro, cold wave, industrial, EBM, minimal synth, and more. Adriani’s open-minded sound universe reflects his wide-ranging and off-kilter tastes, result of countless hours dedicated over the years to unearthing the untold stories behind the music he loves.

Founder of Mannequin Records, since 2008 Adriani has been releasing forgotten gems and up to the minute synth incantations, alongside quietly issuing out his own music on other labels as L.I.E.S. Records, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Jealous God, and Pinkman. Alessandro has also contributed outstanding mixes for Resident Advisor, FACT, Crack Magazine, Bleep, Cxema and Dekmantel. On the festival circuit he’s made appearances at Berghain, Tresor, Atonal, Boiler Room, Dekmantel, ADE, Dimensions, Neopop, Positive Education, Signal and more, together with his bi-monthly dates at Berghain and Panorama Bar, a residency he’s held from 2016 to 2020.

ALESSANDRO ADRIANI - Impressioni Dinamiche

The 7th episode of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency unveils ‘Lapsed’ by MOIN, an experimental ensemble made of London-based production duo Raime (Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead) and percussionist Valentina Magaletti.

Born initially as a side-project by Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead, Moin released its first self-titled EP on Blackest Ever Black in 2013, an overtly sparse post-punk soundscape featuring primitive drums, squalling guitar drones and commanding bass, forming carefully prescribed bursts of passion.
Later joined by long-time collaborator and percussionist Valentina Magaletti, the trio released in 2020 their debut album Moot! On AD93, an 8-track experimental project spanning post-punk, psychedelia and alternative rock with the guitar and Valentina Magaletti’s percussion clearly front and center, giving the album a unique organic texture filled with incantation-like vocals.

Their latest album ‘Paste’ (2022) released on AD93 embraces post-rock, live dub, field recordings and spoken word in a raw, emotional music collage whose kernel you will never locate.
Balancing teenage nostalgia and enduring influences from the ‘80s & ‘90s in a form of kinetic energy that moves perpendicular to contemporary trends, it carries the listener on a rough ride through the darker parts of the psyche, not settling on any one style but moving through them in search of new connections.

Pleased to share the 9th episode of the Kuboraum Digital Sound Residency, hosting Studio LABOUR’s mind-altering soundscape mass and mess, dispersion of subjectivity.

LABOUR is the Berlin-based sonic entity composed by multidisciplinary artists Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander. Bringing together their experience in molecular biology, sound art and post-tonal theory, they compose ambitious and reverently experimental audio works centering around the transformative potential of sound. Their practice promotes active listening and a heightened sensory awareness, interrogating existential questions and the power structures that form our collective reality. Through immersive performances shifting between digital sound synthesis, algorithmic compositions, percussions and vocals, LABOUR explore the juxtaposition of amplified and unamplified sounds within specific architectural spaces.

“LABOUR devise methods of co-existence and distinction through rupture while gesturing towards the possibility of strong, sudden shifts in consciousness.”

'mass and mess, dispersion of subjectivity’ shows their continuing exploration of temporal juxtapositions, merging algorithmic rhythms with cyclical pulsing drum layers to discover alternative notions of time. This new track relates aesthetically to their previous pieces next time, die consciously (بیگانگی) and hit of enlightenment, contemplating on the construction-of-self and the extent to which external forces create us, being heteronomy the condition of all things. Operating simultaneously on multiple temporalities — from microsounds and stochastic synthesis to rhythmic cycles to acknowledging that which propels beyond — these pieces take a critical stance towards notions of regulated time by embracing rhythmic instability and sound as sculptural material.

Their recent performance Sungazing premiered in Kraftwerk during X100 Berlin Atonal (2022) is one of their most extensive works so far, involving an ensemble of 30 drummers, 7 string players, 4 dancers, 2 drum sets, and 3 visual artists, all distributed throughout the audience. Proposed within the framework of Xenakis’ legacy, the performance was described as ‘An ode to the one who pursues an experimental lifestyle, an ode to the avant-garde’. Other commissioned compositions and performances include: Eventide in collaboration with Fa’ Pawaka (2022), Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin ; Sungazing, HAU (2022), Berlin ;  Constructs of Sanity, Musica Sanae, Berlin (2019); nine-sum sorcery, Berlin Atonal (2019); Activating the Gropius Bau, Sonically, Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (2019); next time, die consciously (بیگانگی), Berlin Atonal (2018); Hacklander’s Activating the Messeplatz, Sonically and Stochastic Activation: Basler Trommeln (with Isabel Lewis), Basilea, Art Basel (2018); conatus/consent, Neue Musik in St Ruprecht, St Ruprechtskirche, Vienna (2015) and Levels of Intrusion, transmediale, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2014).

Studio LABOUR - mass and mess, dispersion of subjectivity

World-renowned drummer-composer Valentina Magaletti teams up with Japanese music producer and multi-instrumentalist Susumu Mukai aka Zongamin for the 11th episode of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency. 

Valentina Magaletti and Susumu Mukai have been long-time collaborators since Vanishing Twin, the trio formed in 2015 with Cathy Lucas exploring the spaces bridging jazz and psychedelia through a sound at the juncture of minimalism, kosmische, post-punk, and dream-laden, psychedelic pop.

More recently, Zongamin joined Holy Tongue, a studio project formed in 2018 by producer and musician Al Wootton and Valentina Magaletti. Product of an improvised session in East London, Holy Tongue crafts a sound heavily influenced by dub reggae, translating into high energy live sets that invoke the experimental dub of On-U-Sound, the frenetic rhythms of 23 Skidoo, Liquid Liquid and ESG. The result is psychedelic, free-form, high energy, spiritual dub-dance music. 
Following on from a trilogy of critically acclaimed Eps, Holy Tongue recently released their debut album ‘Deliverance And Spiritual Warfare’ (2023) on Amidah Records, which channels their diverse influences, from the opening Andalusian catholic march to heavyweight dub via jazz, post punk, mystical percussion tracks and techno.

Valentina Magaletti and Zongamin make a fluid and effortless pair, neatly aligned and in perfect synergy with one another, allowing their own artistic talents to shine through their musical outputs. This becomes evident in their debut record as V/Z of dubby post-punk ‘Suono Assente’ (2023) on AD93, where Magaletti plays guitar and keys, sharing bass, percussion and vocal duties with Mukai, together with special guests as Vanishing Twin's Cathy Lucas, Coby Sey and Venus Ex Machina. Veering away from the psychedelic pop of VT, V/Z leans more heavily on influences from hip-hop, dub, post-punk and electronica, with a more open and fluid approach.

 “Whilst its brief twenty-eight minute runtime flashes by, leaving us gasping for more, Suono Assente never feels rushed. Making the temporary existence of this transient brilliance feel even more exceptional. No sooner has its presence lifted us, than it’s vanished once more, leaving a gaping void that can only be filled by immediately circling back to the start and dropping the needle once more.” (The Quietus)
