Montreal’s @clariannorth drops his first EP on Turbo, backed by remixes from @Iron-Galaxy and @Sei-A

Visionquest & Supplement Facts regular, formerly one half of Footprintz, and A&R at Seth Troxler’s new Soft Touch imprint, Clarian has been steadily developing a solid portfolio and reputation. A prolific artist with more than just production skills, he clearly has a special talent for songwriting and a gift for melody. Up until now he’s been notably unconstrained by the narrow limits of EDM genre-fication, and this EP is no exception, as he confidently explores a new direction..

Drawing influence from the bittersweet, emotive sounds of deep, post-Burial UK house, ‘Road to Recovery’ shimmers with romance and nostalgia, a rare case of hauntingly beautiful, yet easily playable dance music. The warm textures and ambient backdrop are just as rich on ‘Who Are They to Judge Us,’ which adds skillfully cut vocals that speak to the producer’s sensitivity.

Turbo and Aus prodigy Sei A is an ideal candidate for remixing Road to Recovery, and he doesn’t disappoint, retaining all the mood and character of the original while toughening up the beats and reworking the arrangement to turn it into a club weapon.

Fellow Montrealer Iron Galaxy, hot off remarkable Boiler Room and Mutek performances, as well as releases on James Zabiela’s Born Electric and Audio Culture, shows off analog wizardry with his remix of ‘Who Are They to Judge Us,’ building the energy up through melodic counterpoint. 

Far and away the most musical thing to come out on Turbo in a while, not to be missed!

Belgium’s music scene has few cornerstones. R&S set a first in the 80s, Soulwax came in the 90s and Eskimo emerged in the early 00s, its evolution since more colourful than all of them combined. Taking music into emotion, introducing new names and spotlighting the cream of the current crop, ‘The Orange Collection’ is bright, genial and buoyant. 

‘The Orange Collection’ is the latest installment in a new compilation series on Eskimo based around colours. Following the lauded first three chapters in this enterprising series -Pink, Blue and Green- Eskimo once again selected 12 songs with exquisite care. An effortless journey encompassing a range of sounds through indie dance, nu disco and electronica, it’s reassuring to find that Eskimo still stands for timeless quality and originality.

Rho Persei is a star in the northern constellation of Perseus. A key figure in Greek mythology, Perseus blazed a trail across the sky in his quest to defeat the Gorgons...a tale now reprised here, in Chapter 15.

Our latest story in sound casts Sezer Uysal in centre stage. Artists across the creative realm frequently lament the difficulty of putting thoughts onto paper. In electronic dance music, it’s the producers whose quest is to battle the hardships of making the creativity of mind materialize on a computer screen.

For Sezer Uysal, finding the right touch is more instinctual. His future written in the stars, he has been a regular on Suara, Hope and Manual Recordings. More great things lie in wait with the Rho Persei EP, for which he is joined by another hero of underground house music: Luis Leon (Blankhaus, Subjekt). 

The EP’s opener, Rho Persei, is a pulsating track. Blending disco guitar licks and haunting ambiences, it is built on a killer bass hook which opens out into synth work of mythic proportions.

The odyssey continues as Sezer Uysal embarks on Bitter Struggle. Here, a chugging house groove built around swelling synth stabs is the order of the day. Undulating melodies unfurl, Medusa-like, masterfully executed.

The third act comes with Space Egg, as we take to the skies. Sure enough, the artist never loses his head. Warm atmospheres abound in a driving piece rich in Sezer’s signature melodies. 

Luis Leon’s Cosmic Edition of Space Egg brings things to a close. A real treat, this refined house cut adds a vocal sample and finishes the story with a slab of beguiling and futuristic sounds. In all senses, a stone cold killer.
