• Victoria, from Bulgaria, was supposed to start in 2020 with "Tears are getting sober" , but Corona wouldn't let that happen. But just like her two co-favorites from last year, The Roop (Lithuania) and Gjon's Tears (Switzerland), Victoria will be back in 2021.
Nevertheless, "Tears ..." definitely remains a disturbingly beautiful Eurovision ballad.

Tears are getting sober

• After the decisive changes in world politics in 1989 (in which, significantly, Yugoslavia won the Copntest for the first and only time), many of the entries from 1990 were shaped by precisely these changes. Whether "Fri?" (Finland), "Keine Mauern mehr" (Austria), "Brandenburger Tor" (Norway), "Frei zu leben" (Germany) or "Somewhere in Europe" (Ireland), it turned out to be the most politically conscious vintage ever . Toto Cutugno, at that time not only a star in Italy but almost all over Europe, topped it all with his "Insieme 1992":  driving slowbeat and lyrics that yearn for a united Europe. The actual composition (written by Cutugno himself), with an unfortunately not so well aged production, reveals its secret and wistful elegance only when reduced to piano and voice. And then similarities to other pop classics are of course pure coincidence...
• Nach den weltpolitisch entscheidenden Veränderungen des Jahres 1989 (in dem auch noch bezeichnenderweise Jugoslawien zum ersten und einzigen Mal den Contest gewann), waren viele der Beiträge des Jahrgangs 1990 von eben diesen Veränderungen geprägt. Ob nun "Fri?"(Finnland), "Keine Mauern mehr" (Österreich), "Brandenburger Tor" (Norwegen), "Frei zu leben" (Deutschland) oder "Somewhere in Europe" (Irland), kein ESC-Jahrgang war eurovisionär politischer geprägt als dieser. Toto Cutugno, damals nicht nur in Italien sondern beinah europaweit ein Star, setzte mit seinem selbst verfassten "Insieme 1992" allerdings allem die Krone auf: treibender Slowbeat und ein Text, der ein vereintes Europa beschwört. Die eigentliche Komposition, mit leider nicht so gut gealterter Produktion, entpuppt ihre heimliche, wehmütige Eleganz erst wenn man alles auf Klavier und Stimme reduziert. Und dann sind Ähnlichkeiten zu anderen Popklassikern natürlich reiner Zufall...

Papa

Israel's ESC entry in 1977 (the 2nd time performed by Ilanit)seemed to be THE hymnal favourite and although France's no less hymnal  "L'oiseau et l'enfant" won the contest, "Love is a song for two" (as the title says in English) only came 11th but is still a shining treasure in the ESC canon.

Den Vilda (Demo-Recording)

Gigliola Cinquetti, famous italian songstress, participated 3 times in Eurovision's history. 1964 she won (the first time for Italy) with "Non ho l'età" ("I don't have the age", meaning "I'm too young (for you)". Ten years later, 1974, she came second behind ABBA with "Si" ("Yes") and in 1991 she presented (together with Toto Cutugno, ESC winner from 1990) the ESC 1991 at Cinecittà, near Rome.
