Johnny "Juan" Sedes’ 1969 Fonseca Record Mamá Calunga is music formed by Venezuelan traditions, seduced by the New York Latin music scene of the 1960s. Another album from ¡Andale!’s reissue series of the Fonseca label, Mamá Calunga shows that Fonseca’s long reach, represented so far by Latinos of New York, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, extends further here to Venezuela.

Sedes shines here on his hardest to find solo album Mamá Calunga. (The original LP consistently auctions for triple digits.) Recorded in the heart of New York City in 1969, the album features Fonseca’s hand-picked, up-and-coming talent like Ricardo Ray along with veterans like Candido Camero. And this record is a stunner all the way! Packed with Latin dancefloor fillers, Mamá Calunga delivers the goods with killer desgarga, guagaunco, mambo, guajira and jala jala, sure to make heads bob and feet move! This is the first reissue since its original Fonseca release 45 years ago.

Recent interviews with Sedes tell his story as young prodigy in Venezuela, who after tasting the New York Latin scene in an earlier visit, returned in ‘67 to develop his career. He recorded a Vitin Lopez LP, one of the first with “Salsa” in the title, with pianist Ricardo Ray and singer Bobby Cruz, who were on Fonseca’s label. Fonseca saw the opportunity to record Sedes’ music with Ray and Cruz again and so Johnny Sedes And His Orchestra was formed for their Mamá Calunga debut.

With Sedes-blown saxaphone over a cast of later-to-be Latin all-stars that include vocalists Chivirico Davila, Leo Gonzales, and Bobby Cruz, pianist Ricardo Ray, trumpeters Pedro Rafael Chaparro and Don Palmer, saxophonist Mario Rivera, and veteran percussionist Candido Camero, this Fonseca reissue is a gem from the era and a uniquely Venezuelan addition to ¡Andale!’s reissue series.

The Frightnrs escort Daptone into the world of long-playing reggae with both the sweetest and the roughest record of the decade.

Crafted under the meticulous eye of black-belt reggae mastermind/producer Victor Axelrod (AKA Ticklah), Nothing More to Say is a rocksteady masterpiece the likes of which has not reared it’s head since the golden era of Studio One.  However, you’ll find no imitation here - none of the faux-jamaican cliches of lesser reggae bands.  Like all things Daptone, this record is above all soulful and honest. With the exception of two soul covers (both from the Daptone catalog: Bob & Gene’s "Gotta Find a Way” and Saun and Starr’s “Gonna Make Time”,) the record is populated by original compositions of the highest order.  They are simply great songs, and though their treatment here is masterful, each one of them has the melodic and lyrical substance to hold it’s own in any genre. “Till Then” invokes the coquettish hyper-rhymes of top-form Smokey Robinson, while “Hey Brother” sounds like it fell off the desk of Gamble and Huff, and “Purple” defies any comparison at all.  From the first cracking snares of “All My Tears” through the final pulsing echoes of “Dispute,” the murderous rhythms of Rich Terrana (drums,) and brothers Preet and Chuck Patel (bass and piano, respectively) can be heard chunking mercilessly towards oblivion as Dan Klein pours his endearing poetry over over the top like some other-worldy falsetto potion. The combination is a sound birthday-suit raw, mesmerizing, infectious, and above all, lovely. This record will long be treasured by lovers of reggae, lovers of soul and lovers of love.

Williams voiced the breakthrough track "Armagideon Time" in 1979. "Jackie Mittoo and myself were working on some projects and we went to New York and met up with Coxson [Dodd]," Williams recalls. "I had a song at the time that was getting good coverage ['Messenger Man']. [Dodd] heard the song and he wanted to continue recording with me. He mentioned that when we started out in the early days, he didn't have enough time and ammunition to work with me how he wanted. So he wanted me to go back into the studio.”

Williams' original recording of "Armagideon Time" has remained a reggae standard and was included on the comprehensive four-disc set, Tougher Than Tough: The Story of Jamaican Music, released by Mango Records in 1993. "Armagideon Time" also found its way back into popular culture in recent years via the 1999 Jim Jarmusch film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. 

"Armagideon Time" utilized the recognizable Studio One backing track known as "Real Rock." Willi Williams' cut of the rhythm helped propel it to become the most "versioned" or recycled in all of reggae history. Punk legends The Clash helped internationalize "Armagideon Time" in 1979 as a b-side to its "London Calling" single and a standard
part of its live performances.
