Recorded in 2015, this was my first mix as Kutkh Jackdaw. Blackest Ever Black was a huge influence for me back then and both the label and radio shows helped me to discover artists and genres that were completely new and fresh sounding to my ears. Inspired by this, I wanted to compile a selection of tracks that showcased the wide variety of sounds that I was listening to at that time.

Kutkh Jackdaw - Live on Lusophonica 19/04/24

This is essentially a remix of the 1977 UK punk classic 'Emergency' by 999. When I first started production, I wanted to combine my punk influences with my electronic influences in an interesting way. The original track by 999 was one of the first tracks I heard that inspired me with my ideas. I heard the solo guitars in the intro and thought I could do something with those. Compared to my previous two tracks; 'Innocents' and 'Psycho Killer' where the electronic influences were a lot stronger, 'Emergency' has more of a live-band feel. I was discovering coldwave and minimal wave, and those influences were beginning to creep into my music. I was also still listening to a lot of bass music/dubstep at this time, and maybe you can hear those influences in the track too, particularly in the 140bpm tempo and half-step beat.

The Post-Punk Tracks

Emergency

This was my first track that wasn't at 140bpm. I slowed things down to 120bpm, although the live drums make it feel faster. At the time, I was listening to a lot of Powell, Shit & Shine, Not Waving, and Broken English Club, and I was inspired by the idea of 'post-punk techno'. About 90% of this track is made from samples from old punk records. It's also the first track that I used hardware on. I had bought a Roland R8 mkII drum machine, and so beefed up the percussion using this.

A Warrior's Song Before The Flesh Is Eaten (Rinse France Rip 30/04/20 Caldera)

I recorded this mix back in 2012 under my previous alias, Harbinger. I mainly played 'bass music' - dubstep, grime, uk funky, d&b etc, but I was also really into acid. I thought this would fit in with the kind of stuff I play now as Kutkh Jackdaw, and the mix got quite a lot of love back then, so decided to re-upload it, as it's no longer on my Harbinger page. Feel free to give it a download! It starts off with a couple of newer acid bits, but quickly goes back to the late 80s / early 90s stuff, which makes up the majority of the mix.
