Twenty-five years after starting this mixtape series, SlowJams Vol 22 is here!  This tradition started back in 1998 while I was living above Walgreens in the Lower Haight, San Francisco with some of the people who made me the man I am today …..The series featured music from the deeper, “late night” end of my record collection that almost never made its’s way onto the regular DJ mixtapes we were all making in the late nineties.  Over the years I have been told that these recordings have soundtracked many of my friends lives. Their romances, their after-hours’ and their Sunday sessions. This latest instalment has some heavyweight tracks on it….hope you enjoy!

Born from the faded neon glow of Brazil’s late-night cityscapes and the haunting echoes of the dancefloors, Modern Life is the latest EP by Encanto—a cinematic and emotionally charged journey through everyday fantasies and bittersweet introspection. Blending acid, deep house, dream house, and Balearic textures, the EP explores the space between reality and imagination—where melancholy meets movement, and sound becomes a vehicle for visual storytelling.

Crafted with a minimal home studio setup and an instinctive approach to production, Modern Life channels the mood of VHS nostalgia: dusty, saturated, and emotionally ambiguous. Inspired by late-night thoughts, urban escapism, and the aesthetic universe of David Lynch, the EP translates complex emotional states into hypnotic basslines, washed-out pads, and cinematic build-ups designed for both the dancefloor and the inner world.

Modern Life it's a reflection on how we romanticize our chaos—through film, through music, through moments of trance. It's an invitation to dream, to release, and to feel deeply while moving through the blurred edges of modern existence.

“Modern Life,” the upcoming EP from resourceful Brazilian producer Encanto, emerges like a half-remembered dream from the flickering projector of a midnight cinema. Set to release on the Mexican powerhouse Kyma Komplex, this five-track voyage melts acid, deep house, and Balearic hues into a Lynchian palette – where the mundane twists into the surreal. Drawing from urban solitude and the liminal space between sleep and wakefulness, the EP stitches together hypnotic basslines, ethereal pads, and cinematic progressions, crafting a soundscape as suited for dimly lit clubs as for solitary drives through rain-slicked streets. It’s a sonic tapestry woven with threads of nostalgia, longing, and the eerie beauty of the uncanny.

Premiered here, “A Whole Life,” the opening cut, is a paradox – both luminous and weighted, like sunlight filtering through closed blinds. Its buoyant kick drums and achingly tender melodies create a push-and-pull between euphoria and quiet sorrow, a dance-floor daydream with an undercurrent of yearning. “I started DJing nearly 20 years ago, at least partially inspired by the way Erol used to play at Trash and later Bugged Out and beyond. I was lucky enough to book him over the years at our Adventures In The Beetroot Field parties as well as Field Day and even the Lock Tavern, which I used to programme back then. As I drifted more towards exploring techno under my Volte-Face moniker, our paths diverged somewhat, and a few years went by when I didn't bump into him or see him play all that often. So this mix feels like a homecoming of sorts, and an expression of a rekindled musical freedom and a cherished friendship. I even managed to squeeze in a track by Tiga, who was another formative influence for me. I hope it's as fun to listen to the mix as it was to make it.” - Casper Clark
