Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 360–415 AD) was a prominent mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher of late antiquity. She lived and worked in Alexandria, one of the most important intellectual and cultural metropolises of the time. Hypatia was the daughter of the mathematician Theon, who enabled her to receive an exceptional education – a rarity for women in antiquity.

She taught publicly, was a respected representative of Neoplatonism, and contributed to mathematics with commentaries on the works of Apollonius and Diophantus. She was also active in astronomy and technology, for example through the development and use of instruments such as the astrolabe.

Hypatia fell victim to a political and religious power struggle in Alexandria, which was increasingly influenced by Christianity. In 415 AD, she was brutally murdered by an angry mob – her death is considered a symbol of the conflict between science and religious fanaticism and marks the end of classical ancient culture in Alexandria.

To this day, Hypatia is considered a symbolic figure for science, reason and female emancipation.

July 28, 2017, has seen the release of Atomic Blonde, the action movie starring Charlize Theron. The soundtrack includes both Nena‘s 1983 anti-war protest song “99 Luftballons” along with a cover by Anglo-German electronic duo Kaleida.

SIN COS TAN is the new project of ace producer Jori Hulkkonen and VILLA NAH’s Juho Paalosmaa. Having worked together previously on VILLA NAH’s superb debut album ‘Origin’ and on the track ‘Re: Last Year’ from Hulkkonen’s own ‘Man From Earth’ solo record, a further artistic union was almost inevitable. They made their live debut at Helsinki’s Flow Festival this summer 2012.

The superbly pulsating ‘Trust’ showcases the pair’s manifesto to be “a synthesized duo of great promise, broken dreams, and long nights”. Add in sweeping drifts, sharp widescreen cimbalom, danceable but subtle beats and emotive vocals tinged with sadness from Paalosmaa, what more could you want? ‘Trust’ could possibly be the song of 2012…

So while VILLA NAH take a sabbatical and Hulkkonen wears yet another hat (other monikers have included PROCESSORY, ZYNTHERIUS, ACID SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, KEBACID, DRUMMAN, STOP MODERNISTS and THE TANIA & JORI CONTINENTS!), SIN COS TAN are now finishing an album for forthcoming release.
