Kicking off with neuro-veterans Uman & Vegas’ rowdy Lazer Godz, Soul Synthetic signals the beginning of a new chapter in the Bad Taste Recordings story. Fresh from their devastating Machine Room Levels EP’s, a release which has already racked up over 400,000 views on UKF, the Teddy Killerz return to Soul Synthetic to put their spin on Aeph’s Scumbag whilst Billain also offers up Minerva, a deadly bass juggernaut. As well as stormers from some of Bad Taste’s most illustrious respected artists, young guns such as Encode and Valrus, Int Company, Detail, Signs, Cruk and Rusty K also unleash a salvo of aggressive, energetic beats.

Yes, it really has been fifteen years since Future Tech (aka Drumsound & Bassline Smith) signalled the beginning of the Technique Recordings odyssey with their eponymous debut collaboration. Since then, the drum and bass sound has spread its tendrils from the dark corners of the underground into the limelight of mainstream appreciation. And Technique has been at the forefront of that evolution all the way. So, here's an LP to show the world exactly what a decade and a half among the top tier of D&B labels sounds like.

Label heads Drumsound & Bassline Smith take pole position, dropping straight into the drama of the Friction-supported “Spring Heel Jack”. Then comes another of Technique's most recognisable acts, Tantrum Desire with the low-down funk of “Shuffle”, followed by another Friction-favourite from the bossmen with “Sputnik”. The big names keep coming throughout the album, as Crissy Criss supplies the VIP of his monumental “Create the Future” and the mighty Digital goes dubbed-out with a remix of “Phantasm”. Plus Drumsound & Bassline Smith's alter-ego 2DB pass through with the highly-grimey “Terrahawk” and L Plus delivers two precision-engineered killers in the form of “Red Planet” and “Going Down”.

Flipping the script, Technique new boys Document One strike from two angles with the laid-back “Jazz Club” and the dirty dancefloor uppercut of “Body Like Wow”. TREi takes us to the big room with “Here & Now”, and the ever-individual MaxNRG shows off his ability to combine energy with melody on “Far Frontiers of Space”. Erb N Dub and Skope recruit Mr Dirty Smirks, MC SMK himself, to bring some typically hard bars to “Pull it Back”. Kronology does what it says on the tin with some “Razor Sharp” technoid-jungle vibes. And Aussie badman Spectrem brings some hands-in-the-air euphoria with “Say Goodbye” and then roughen things up with “The Future”. Infrasonik take the honour of completing the collection with “Bricks Breaking”. Elevated far above the streets in one of the towering high-rise buildings that dominated the urban heart, the sound of the high-octane pursuit below barely penetrated the bleak musty cubical. Its cigarette-stained walls are etched with the marks he’d made to signify the passing of his life in this space. The ever-present hum of building’s servers that once he’d thought faintly pleasant, oppressively penetrated his eardrums - continually evolving… scraping the inside of his brain like sonic sandpaper. Flickering lights from the city’s exterior advertisements strobed across the dark sea of cubicles, the huddled occupants of each fixated on the faint glow of their viewscreens, their enslaved minds pouring over the flow of a sea of meaningless data. The lights hurt his eyes these days, each wave illuminating his dank space peaked his migraine – like shards of glass penetrating deep into the roots of his skull and twisting within his cortex on the way. He was at the edge, hovering on the very horizon of sanity itself… the boundary blurring – what was more insane – this existence? Or the one he desired – to tear himself free from the bonds of this reality… for his heart to burn with the light of a thousand stars as he steered his body towards the purity of presence outside of this slavery… to defy the great architect and stand proud just for a moment… Just as this thought manifested, he felt the tight grip upon his shoulder - briskly pulling him around to see the corrupt, fat, distorted face of the overseer sneering down through that twisted crevice of a mouth. Those chains broke – he felt his hand grasping the keyboard that he had been so long manacled to in his mind, moving with the rotation of the chair as he rose swiftly with the roar that escaped him so fluidly. The overseer’s shocked expression froze in time as the keyboard collided with his mouth – landing with such brutal force that the shockwave passed through his fat face. With that roar, he felt free… he had found himself.
 
SEGMENT & CONCEPT VISION follow up their incredible MAMMOTH EP with their 2nd impressive outing on neurofunk’s leading label, EATBRAIN. Proving once more the exceptional skill of their combined production with the 5 heavy-duty tracks of the ROAR EP (including free release with the vocal-led ‘EMPIRE’), the pair set the bar high through their powerful sound. Whether it’s the stuttering might of title track ROAR with its nightmare fueled arpeggios, or the dub-influenced sci-fi majesty of THIRST (featuring COD3X) - each track proves more relentless than the last. This is tear-out neurofunk at its best, proving once again the strength of the EATBRAIN sound and cementing another incredible pair of Russian producers within the roster.

It’s time for another release from Kosen Productions – the French label who’ve shown an undeniable penchant for releasing high quality music at a staggering rate. And it’s not just scene heavyweights such as Signs, The Clamps and Nickbee who’ve paved the way in recent years for the imprint. It’s also artists like Machine Cult, who Kosen have spent time identifying amongst the tide of emerging newcomers. And he leads the charge for their next release, a four track EP which will surely be the turning point for a blossoming production career. 

With first track ‘Deepmind’ serving as a climatic entree, Machine Cult lets you know exactly what he’s about. Weighty pads and a zig-zagging bassline characterise the artist’s signature, pushing forward on sub-heavy kicks and punchy sonics. Machine Cult gives his own take on the neurofunk vibe, with pitched up instrumentals and a drop which throws you straight into a dancefloor-lead set of hooks. ‘Conduit’ is your second helping, a track which shakes you to the core, building up on dark atmospherics and carefully strung arpeggios. Layer by layer, the intensity rises, with the pace quickening alongside an explosion of beats. ‘Conduit’ runs like a freight train, unstoppable in its driving power and leading you on top of a colossal mix.

For the EP’s second part, ‘Data Husk’ features a more minimal approach. Flickering drums and distorted LFO orchestrates a dark, aloof feel to the record. Humanistic overtures act as synths, peaking between each cautiously manufactured segment. Orchestral undertones are also made identifiable, pushing forward between each twisting loop of bass. ‘Data Husk’ is a nod to Machine Cult’s moody underbelly, proving just how deep the producer can go. ‘Tech Priest’ is the final cut on the EP’s track listing. With pulsing bass and clinking, metallic breaks, diced up, robotic samples are planted at articulated intervals, helping to open up the track’s menacing backdrop. Reminiscent of the old-school, darkly lit rollers which made drum & bass so infamous, Machine Cult proves he knows his history. Not only is this another pivotal signing for Kosen, but it’s also an exciting new installation for the whole drum & bass community.
