The festival season is fast approaching yet again, and one of the first (and biggest) events kicking off in the UK is We Are FSTVL. The festival is based in Upminster just on the outskirts of London and will be entering its third year in 2015. Just as we did last year, we've teamed up with the huge event to collaborate on a podcast series - the first of which comes from Desolat mainstay, Yaya.

We couldn't be more excited about this year's We Are FSTVL, which will continue their impressive approach to large-scale electronic music events with an almighty line-up including Carl Cox, Seth Troxler, Hannah Wants, Loco Dice, Masters At Work, MK, Ricardo Villalobos, Steve Aoki, Steve Angello, Jamie Jones, Sven Vath, DJ EZ and many many more. When it comes to djs today, we won't be shy to say there are not all too many we hold in high regard over here currently...Then you go to the Golden Pudel and play with Phoung-Dan and your mind gets fried immediately. It's djs like Dan who has held his Gatto Musculoso night for 7 (or was it 8 years)at the afforementioned Hamburg, Germany club that give us faith that all has not gone to complete shit in this narrow minded static clubbing world. I could go on and on with the accolades, but why not just let the music speak for itself. You can catch Dan a handful of times a year at his residency at Pudel as well as travelling through various European locales playing quite often . Not to mention, he's also a very familar face at Dusseldorf's Salon des Amatuers, so stick your head in there if you're in the area. And If you don't know about this man, well, now you know.

I met Jon Rust a couple years back while hanging with Ben UFO in London. Ben had brought me to a party in some small basement of a bar and Rust and his crew were throwing down no holds barred. It didn't matter, from house to disco to boogie to techno...moving all in a rugged and raw fashion...it was djing how it should be...and the crowd was most definitely feeling it. I was impressed. A couple mojhitos later we were shooting the shit and the rest was history. Jon Rust is no stranger to the people of London as an NTS resident dj, he also runs the always adventerous Levels label (which you can check out here https://soundcloud.com/levels-5). In an interview with the Quietus in November, Gwyer carefully describes the aesthetic she might be striving for in her own music as wanting to be loud, banging and not what people expect, whilst still meandering between house, techno and hugely experimental noise. There's none of her own productions in her Truancy Volume (from what we can see in the tracklist) but we can't help feel that small description perfectly encapsulates the hour long mix she's recorded for us. There's house and techno but at unexpected tempos ranging from 118BPM to the upper echelons of 144BPM for a substantial duration. It's loud and it bangs from very early on. This is all intricately layered throughout with noise productions from the likes of Acre and Nadia Khan, blending the percussive elements with the beatless with the upmost attention to detail to the overall sound. If there wasn't a tracklist included we'd have been very hard pressed in telling the Acre/Villa Abo section at 35 minutes apart to the point where we may be unable to listen to those tracks singularly ever again. It's this "singular vision" as a whole mix that makes our 120th Truancy Volume one of the most unique listening experiences we've had in our series so far.

Jon Rust Boiler Room Nottingham DJ Set

Jon Rust is a real DJ’s DJ. With roots in London’s club heritage and an approach to DJing which reflects that, Rust draws inspiration from the city's rich diversity and no-holds-barred approach to music. This is also backed up by the fact that he has hosted a deliciously diverse show on NTS since the stations first week of broadcasting -  "No Boring Intros". Rust also runs his own label, Levels, where he has put out music from Lord Tusk and Ajukaja, amongst others.

His 75 minute mix for us proves why this Londoner is so admired: it wastes no time in setting a nice house vibe with the use of plenty of unusual tracks, unknown gems and unlikely grooves. From bumping and dirty to down and deep, he manages to tie all these different strands together into something truly thrilling.

Unlike many so-called djs who these days rely on social media nonsense and shallow baseless forms of creating an image via hollow content, Alienata is the exact opposite. A true dj who has been in the trenches working hard for a long, long time, her djing skills speak for themselves...and they speak legions. Flawless in every sense fo the word, technical with top notch selections possessing true depth and again NEVER following the trends, this is how she has made a name for herself and the hard work has paid off. Easily one of our favorite djs who thankfully is now not so under the radar anymore.

The baroness of sludge and eroticism, the Vampira of "techno", the Elvira of acid... she's been called many things but who the hell is she?

L.Sangre was originally hatched in the gothic swaps of Miami and marinated/refined in the realness of New York for a bit over a decade, wherein the last half she's dj'ed here,around and beyond.

Rhythmic proclivities, acidic elements, and the ebb and flow of industrial roots to name a few, all inform the influences she draws from in her past to drive her present.

In 2018 she and Silent Servant paired up to produce releases as their project Limit-Xperience, and their two EPs were released under her Orden Extatica label.  Locally, she is a resident dj for the Lost Soul Enterprises crew and party series that pops up with in various locations around Brooklyn (most recently by way of a Good Room residency). ? 

Often disenchanted with the current state of popular techno affairs, she finds community with the real ones and mutant family she finds intermittently throughout the musical journey across the country and world.  appropriately honoured to contribute to the L.I.E.S. series as a result.

The main reason is that as an artist I have always reinvested any success I have directly back into the music, the show and the art that goes along with it. There is an insightful documentary film on the making of this project to be released alongside the launch of the album, as well as a music video for every song. They are all beautiful and uniquely unusual pieces of art.

I have stayed on the path of being a completely independent musician and with the help of every supporter and friend, we have transformed a simple idea into a movement, a cultural beacon of light.
