SWEAT THE SUNSHINE IN!

Ideal for short breaks, long road trips, tall drinks and wide-screen couch potato salads your Finders Keepers holiday reps Andy Votel, Pete Mitchell and Doug Shipton manage to string entire sentences together while juggling exotic fuzz-ridden phonograms in celebration of sunstroke psychedelia, South American soap operas, pseudo Samba and the greatest ancient sporting festival of all time. Behold Olympic fever.

Rio is our muse this month and with a lukewarm Gulf Stream between their Mancunian tootsies the guardians of the Keepers Cottage take the sacred torch and shine it on a bunch of Italian sports library LPs, some anthemic Athenian psych and twenty tonnes of Brazilian obscurities uniting São Paulo's 50c bargain bins with record fair wall pieces. Peppered with token doses of tenuous sports terminology and the usual magnetic blend of the irreverent and the irrelevant the sunshine soldiers you have learned to love, cherish and tolerate aim to sooth, groove and prove that hockey sticks and drum sticks ain't that dissimilar if you squint your ears!

Finders Keepers Radio - Brazil Special

Joy Orbsion is someone we have a long and fruitful relationship with here at Dekmantel. He is, and always has been, a pure embodiment of UK dance music. His sound is steeped in English musical history (often explicitly in the form of sampled monologues) but also very much makes a new history of its own. He’s had countless underground hits from his definitive post-dubstep breakthrough ‘Hyph Mngo’ to his peak time tech tools with Boddika, and each one marks a mini reinvention of his style. What ties them all together, though, is O’Grady’s unique penchant for blending garage, bass, funky, house, techno and old school jungle into his own fresh concoctions. 

The two hour podcast he has served up here -as a perfect warm up to our festival this weekend- is split into two parts. Says the artist himself, “the first half is basically a way of showcasing producers that are doing great things at the moment and is completely made up of new, unreleased music, and the second half is basically winding things down with a load of stuff from my record collection. A come down, of sorts.” Starting with a spoken word snippet from his jungle playing uncle Ray Keith, the mix is initially atmospheric and moody, with sleek and stripped back drums and smeared synths making for a heady and intimate mood. After picking up through skewed bass patterns and skeletal techno, the second half seduces with elegiac rhythms, jazz selections and spoken word tracks as well as delicious soul sounds, reggae and stoned broken beat.  The results show exactly where Orbison is at musically, as well as offering an insight into where he has come from.

Magic Mountain High is a collaboration between David Moufang aka Move D, Gal Aner and Jordan Czamanski aka Juju & Jordash. As Magic Mountain High they've released one record on Workshop Records entitled 'Workshop xx', which was recorded a year ago at Move D's studio. All three tracks are based on live jams and improvisations in the studio, similar to how Magic Mountain High perform on stage, but made shorter so as to fit on vinyl.

Ahead of Magic Mountain High's London performance on Saturday 9th March for Phonica and ReviveHER alongside Vakula and Maurice Fulton we caught up with Gal and Jordan for a short interview, where we discuss Freerotation, their live setup and how they manage to work together despite geographical differences. This Inverted Audio mix is a recording of the trio playing live at Panoramabar in September 2012, with guest vocals by Eric D Clark and when we say live, we mean 100% live, no cheats, no edits just the plain truth.
