Slow Dancing is when you’ve been stuck in a world, or a part of your mind or life and then you feel pulled out of it- reminded that things were moving even you couldnt see it. Or you were still on the journey even though the world flew around you - there was a still, quiet path and your feet were on it. And you want to celebrate this sudden awareness and gladly discard the dead weight. 

 I wanted to capture something in Slow Dancing that speaks to being led and being carried. Despite you and inspite of the world. We are moving and being moved.

What we value sometimes doesn't get us what we want. I watched my programmed need to be productive get in the way of the loving person I wanted to be for my kids. I know this is a universal theme for parents: wanting to give their kids the best life they can, but in the process, maybe we miss being the best thing kids need at the time. And perhaps the world just isn't set up for us to succeed at that, no matter how we try.

In Christchurch, March 15th 2019 my eldest daughter turned 5, and a shooter ran into a Mosque.  We were locked down in the kindergarten.  The women in my community were wailing, in an instant  their children were fatherless, mothers were solo-parents. After that day we made a decision to walk together with them to and from Kindy, because no body felt safe and every white man  held  the risk of violence. 'Will you shoot us?' ' Do you harbour the thought?' "Grief" is the observation of fragility. Of the grief I felt in the failure of one single human to value others as he valued himself. Of his failure to be descent. Grief is for the women, who lost and lost and lost again but  who became out friends, who made us lunch and who we taught to drive. Who we laughed and cried with.  Who I daily marvelled at how they carried on. 
We are the shooter, 
We are the widowed 
we are the orphaned 
and we reach each other through love.
