In 2006, Aurélie Nadler (my wife, btw) made an amazing homemade movie called Cigales et FouRMIs (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6k1cg_cigales-et-fourmis_creation#.Uek0OGR5y3Y).
She needed some original music for the film, and we worked together for several months before finding a common ground.
I had just begun to learn how to play the electric bass with a rock group, and used it extensively during these sessions.

Sonic

Electroacoustic ('musique concrète') piece Inspired by the high mimetic capacities of the starling bird, which can imitate about any kind of sound, including machines and synthesizers that, in return, imitate nature in their mechanical extravaganza (the ARP2600 creates R2D2, which sings and babbles like a bird, etc.). A bird imitates a machine which imitates a bird. On a loop.

Flocks of starlings can be made of millions of individuals. They form huge black clouds in the sky that evolve in ever changing waves and shapes. No leader, no chief, no follower, but a collective 'brain' that keeps adapting to itself constantly.
Those flocks are called 'murmurations'.

Part of the february 02, 2008 Cromorne 13 ICS session.

This little doodle was meant for two original purposes (apart from having fun) : 
1) learning how to properly use a vocoder; 
2) building something around polyrhythm that would sound obvious to any ear (hence the use of numbers). 
It instantly became - to my surprise - the favorite Labsynth ICS track of a lot of my fellow ICS composers.

First orchestral suite created in ICS conditions (12 hours non stop composition).
The suite is an hommage to JK Rowling's magical universe, which I was discovering with shameless delight at the time.
It uses pretty intensively the "distributed melody" compositional trick (each note of a melody is played by a different instrument).
Made with Reason and the infamous Orkestra library.

First Hat Lib game (an imaginary movie script is written collectively by glueing together randomly chosen pieces of story written by each member of the lodge, then randomly distributed to each member for him or her to write a composition on each section).

First orchestral piece written with Vienna Library Symphony.

Written in ICS conditions (12 hours non stop composition).

Professor Metal Head

Metal Head Eats All And Everything

First ICS track swap with multi-talented Michael Iago Mellender (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Lower Animals...).
Michael was in Oakland, I was in Paris. Track swap was made during a couple of nights. I made 2 compositions (Flat Frog and Iago) and sent them to Michael for further enhancement/destruction/reconstruction; Michael sent me 3 tracks which I rewrote in return.
The final result was not heard by any of us before weeks, when Michael came to Paris and we celebrated our physical encounter with a big Cromorne 13 party.
[Fun fact : at the very end of Flat Frog, you can hear, right through the right ear, Michael shouting "Did you get that?!?", which is an allusion to the physical distance between us - an ocean - and the means to communicate through music - the internet -]

ICS 14 05 2011

Following the two piano impros (previously posted on my soundcloud account), I decided to try something absurd : to make a cover version of Ambugation, one of my favorite titles from SGM (from the stupefying album Grand Opening And Closing), using only a piano and no overdub.
Could it be played? Did it make sense? Would the result be interesting?

In the end, this was, mainly, a very nice training for me to better understand how this amazing song is constructed.
