We have been waiting impatiently for new songs from LA CASA AZUL to arrive. And it clearly wasn’t going to be an easy album. After having reached larger audiences, after having reached mainstream levels with their independent proposal, far from what the mainstream was used to, after having been heard both in small independent festivals as well as the return of Operación Triunfo, after having remixed Camilo Sesto’s “Vivir Así Es Morir De Amor” or having masterfully reconstructed and reinvented Nino Bravo’s whole album. From composing and producing FANGORIA’s latest hits, from writing songs for TV shows and movies, from being a judge on the talent show “Oh Happy Day” on TV3 or the teacher in the Operación Triunfo academy, from continuing with radio collaborations, from writing for different media, from writing and producing five songs for the children’s cartoon show “PINY: Instituto de Nueva York” (which Ali Howard of LUCKY SOUL sings on), from winning a Goya with a rumba, from DJing in the most important clubs in the country or making the latest version of “Sálvame” (made popular in Spain by Bibi Andersen in 1980) to headline the popular show on Tele 5. There have been so many things, and with so much variety, and above all they have all been created from the most independent spirit with the deepest love of music, that Guille Milkyway can be defined as unique and incomparable, and “La Gran Esfera” will be the album that confirmed this, the definitive emergence, eternity.

And the thing is this album needs to be analyzed from two very different angles. First, that of an artist whose discourse faces the facts of time, who maintains his spacey dreams, but whose lyrics are being weighed down with disappointment, reality and the failure of mankind, the pessimism that was hidden in the escapism we saw in “La Polinesia Meridional”. But there is also the angle of an author who is a relentless music lover, an infallible machine for mixing influences, and who takes an unheard of step forward on this new album, crossing boundaries that few have dared to touch: the line that separates commercial music from independent music, a frontier that has so many preconceptions around it that many artists have been forced to go around it without ever being able to look back. On “La Gran Esfera”, Guille Milkyway knocks the wall down, playing with a million references, current and past, greatest hits and underground, tracks for the dance floor and tracks to break our hearts. You can hear hints of LAS AVES, Etienne Daho, Donna Summer, BOY PABLO, THE BEACH BOYS, VIDEO AGE, ROOSEVELT, ROBOTAKI, BLOSSOMS, THE GO! TEAM and ELO. And all of this without losing even a drop of his own personality.

What is “La Gran Esfera”? Is it the awareness of a painful existence? The bittersweet celebration of a planet full of life and pain? A planetary vision of the human condition? We would need a lot more time and space to read into this more deeply, to analyze all the directions this complex, multifaceted album points toward, while still being highly danceable, without any concessions to the mid-tempo, addictive and catchy, like LA CASA AZUL’s best trademark work. One of the biggest musical influences from the 70s was, undoubtedly, disco music, and the spirit of the clubs and the escapist concept of the weekend it came with. A hard week of work finished on the dance floor, whereyou’re your problems disappeared and everything became an explosion of melodies, colors, love and a feeling of true freedom. Dancing to a pop song is like floating on air, feeling how the melody moves through your heart and irradiates a dose of pleasure that spreads through your entire body at light speed. Music in the clubs has changed a lot since then and a lot of people want to get the melody back on the dance floor.

LA CASA AZUL is back with a huge collection of songs that will feed and light up the dance floors of half the planet, as well as the hearts of the group’s thousands of fans and followers who are spread out over all 7 continents. Guille Milkyway’s new songs give proof of a love equally divided between Phil Spector, Norman Harris, ELO, THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, PIZZICATO FIVE, the RAMONES and THE STYLE COUNCIL.

LA CASA AZUL’s musical universe is a continuous time travelling; “La Polinesia Meridional”, which packs in all of Guille Milkyway’s tastes, can sound totally classic, in the time-period sense of the word, as well as absolutely modern and ground-breaking. The album is a huge explosion of sounds and influences from so many different periods and styles, unprejudiced and exuberant in every way. The melodic elements of the album become the true protagonists over everything else. Despite having more complex structures than ever before, with layers and layers of sound, of distortion, of absolute noise, of multiple arrangements and general baroque stylings, what makes the songs on “La Polinesia Meridional” stand out is precisely their melodic components and the small details that form the songs. TEENAGE FANCLUB’s “Hang on” could be a clear example of how noise can be much more moving because a brilliant melody lives right alongside it.

“La Polinesia Meridional” bursts with love for melodies, declares and demands the essence of pop above all else; the songs are hummable, close to us, and captivatingly popular. It is more and more difficult to define, talk about or try to explain how LA CASA AZUL’s songs are; they have created such a specific universe with such a singular and characteristic sound, but that are always so close to us and to our day-to-day lives that it messes up any theory or definition and reduces everything to one word: accessible. Accessible songs that captivate, seduce and enchant. It is, without a doubt, their best work and, musically, the songs speak for themselves and show off the great talent that Guille possesses and how fascinating his universe is.

This ode to escapism, expressed at its full potential on the album’s title track, is also better proof than ever of the contrasts between the content and the form. The songs’ lyrics are full of disillusionment, suffering, fear… but, musically, the album feels more colorful and explosive than ever in every way: the choruses, orchestration, arrangements, production… The healing effects of LA CASA AZUL’s songs arise from that singular combination.

Spanish pop act La Casa Azul began weaving together the sugar pop sounds of groups like ABBA, the B-52's, and the Beach Boys in the late '90s. Formed by producer/songwriter Guille Milkyway, the band rose from indie pop obscurity to the Spanish Top 40 with the help of niche label Elefant Records. The group initially featured five members -- David, Virginia, Oscar, Clara, and Sergio -- who appeared in the group's popular throwback music videos and on album covers, but La Casa Azul's music is actually created solely by Milkyway. La Casa Azul's debut record, El Sonido Efervescente de la Casa Azul, was released in 2000. Their public recognition continued to swell with television appearances on programs such as Zona Disney and Música Uno. La Casa Azul's hit single and video "Como un Fan" was released in February 2005. The video won the group its largest listening audience thus far, priming Spanish audiences for the 2006 re-release of El Sonido Efervescente. The band's third original release earned a place on the Spanish Top 40 charts following its 2007 release, and La Revolución Sexual quickly became one of Elefant Records' most successful releases. In 2008 a song from the album, "La Revolución Sexual," was a finalist in Spain's Eurovision competition, just missing claiming the crown to become the country's entry that year. After taking some time off and releasing the compilation of singles and remixes La Nueva Yma Sumac: What the Revolution Left Us, Milkyway returned to music and created the incidental music for the popular 2009 film Yo, También. He also wrote and performed the theme song for the film, and was awarded for his efforts by winning Best Original Song at the 2010 Goya Awards. La Casa Azul returned at the end of the year with a new single, "Todas Tus Amigas," then spent 2011 working on a new album. La Polinesia Meridional was released to acclaim and brisk sales in November of 2011. 

Milkyway stayed very busy over the ensuing years writing songs for films, playing the music of Nino Bravo in Las Casa Azul style on the 2013 album En Libertad, acting as a judge on the talent show Oh Happy Day, recording songs for the children's TV show Jelly Jamm (a soundtrack released by Elefant in 2013), and raising his profile through DJ gigs and festival appearances. By the time he released new La Casa Azul music in early 2019 -- an album titled La Gran Esfera -- Milkyway had added more modern sounds like trap beats and radio pop to his sonic arsenal to go along with disco and upbeat pop.
