found audio from when i took a digital sound class during grad school. completed august 2017.

below is my submitted statement:
Iannis Xenakis was who I wanted to use as a starting point. I loved how his piece La Legende D’eer had an overall mood, so I wanted to emulate that. I feel like the first half of my piece is successful with that goal but around the final minute or so I struggled with how to change it up a bit. My audio is either from my field recordings or what I generated myself, with the exception of the cat hissing and growling, which is from freesound. La Legende D’eer starts with high pitched noise, which is a direct reference in my piece, and I also end my piece with the same noise, just set at a different pace.

My two other influences are Bernard Parmegiani’s L'oeil Ecoute, in which there is sampled pop music. It’s faint, but I included one of my field recordings that picked up music playing in the HUB dining hall. I played with the spectrograph of this audio, as well as analog decay, stretch and pitch, reverse, chorus/flanger. 

An interesting moment in my piece is at 01:25, in which I used the time stretching technique of Richard Karpen. As done in Life Study #4, I added audio of a woman in charge of a group of kids, (quietly heard at 01:10) and then repeat this sound at 01:25, where it is stretched out. I applied a doppler shift to this clip, so I emphasized this moment by silencing all other audio, so the movement of the voice can be explicitly heard.
