The beauty of freeform electronic music comes from the ability to experiment with no real bounds. What stands out most to us as creators and curators is an artist’s potential to convey their story by pulling varying influences into a bricolage of tailored audio.

Whether referencing his sonic history or displaying an emotive portrayal of the current, Italian producer Psykh has become one of our favorite storytellers over the years. Intrigued by vintage cinema and retrofuturism, his effort to translate these aged aesthetics into newfound expression refuses to be unnoticed. Such work has landed him on adjacent experimental imprints like Millennium Strike, Tabula Rasa, and of course our beloved Distant Arrays series. We now welcome him back to the label with a standout project that surely serves as a formidable reintroduction.

Fueled by a wide range of niche subgenres, Psykh is inspired by just about everything from gothic rock to dream pop, club classics to chillout electronica, and even as far-out as Memphis rap; his latest offering “Self Non-Self EP” is but a testament to the many paths that form his sonic roadmap. His process mainly incorporates digging through the depths of the internet for audible relics, then building around them with modern production elements. The formula proves to work well for this project as it paints a picture of his current interests - overproduced pop, rustic Asian folk songs, and a fascination for spoken language. The story begins with “Minds I,” a textural track that pulls the clever use of an eerie vocoder into a wormhole of repetition. “Clubbearte” is destined to be the focal point of the EP, sprinkling Azeri vocals upon the intersection of a club-centric and bass music anthem. He recruits support from SLC’s very own Gaszia as well as Moemu, a rising star in the Hong Kong circuit. “Tongue Play” may sound familiar to some - aside from the “speaking in tongues” sample, the track first came to surface in our Label Showcase 02 mix. Playful by nature, Psykh’s heavy techno workout boasts a thumping kick and aggressive percussion hogging the stereo. “Xven” is his unique take on our Chicago footwork roots with erratic yet indistinguishable gothic rock vocals. The curtain closes with “Karma Killa,” a collaboration with Tudd that layers distinct Indian vocals over an EBM-inspired beat. The sample processing emulates ethereal, big room pop that delivers a fitting sense of full-circle closure.

Unafraid to stride further into the hazy leftfield, “Self Non-Self EP” is Psykh and his skilled cast’s ode to thoughtful experimentation. The project is a scavenger hunt of rarities blended together effortlessly, which is a clear nod to his exceptional sampling capabilities. To say this is his best and most cohesive work to date would be an understatement, but it still feels like the story has only just begun for this prolific sound artist.
