As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we'll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. First up we have Tama Sumo and Lakuti, both residents at Berlin's Panorama Bar, the house-focused room upstairs at Berghain. Panorama Bar has played host to thousands—if not millions—of people's most formative dance floor experiences, with an unparalleled vibe, near-perfect sound and window blinds that have taken their own place in dance music mythology. 

The duo's mix highlights the style that Tama Sumo and Lakuti have brought to the club and represents its anything-goes energy, mixing tracks from iconoclasts like Hieroglyphic Being (including one of his best-ever tracks) in with old-school favorites from Reel By Real, Larry Heard and even Ministry, moving from house to industrial to disco without batting an eyelid. Tama Sumo and Lakuti's loose but impeccable flow ties together house music history with a deep love and knowledge of all genres and, perhaps most importantly, the desire and know-how to just make people dance. We couldn't be more thrilled to feature Tama Sumo and Lakuti for the first mix in our birthday series, and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.

Born and raised in South Africa, Lakuti has become an internationally acclaimed DJ, record label owner, and influential figure in the electronic music scene. With a passion for music developed at a young age, Lakuti’s sound has developed since her move to the UK in the 1990s to one that seamlessly blends a wide range of genres from house, techno, disco, Afrobeat and beyond.

Alongside her DJ career, Lakuti has been instrumental in fostering creativity within the industry. In 2001, she co-founded the Uzuri Recordings label, which has since become a respected platform for groundbreaking artists. Through Uzuri, Lakuti has championed innovative sounds, pushing boundaries and introducing emerging talents to a global audience.‍

Also known for her activism and commitment to social change, using her platform to address issues of diversity, equality, and inclusivity within the music industry, Lakuti's dedication to her craft extends beyond the DJ booth and record label. With a tireless efforts to create more inclusive spaces have inspired and empowered countless individuals, Lakuti is blossoming into a true icon in the industry.

For our Pride Special Lakuti is back with frequent collaborator Tama Sumo for another iconic B2B set, and joins the fabric podcast with a very special mix ahead of time.

Join us as we celebrate the adventurous side of 80’s dance music & the emergence of the B-side dub mix! 🧡​🧡🧡

​​Like all club music innovations, the DANCE DUB was born from the interplay between dancers & DJ’s. Adventurous dancers responded to stripped-down, rhythm-heavy compositions – so adventurous DJ’s started doing remixes that stripped away vocals from dance songs of the day, pushed rhythm front & center and added heavy echo & reverb for a trippy, mystic dance vibe.

​​Aural inspiration came from Jamaica, obviously (sometimes via London, as with TW Funkmasters’ massively influential Love Money, produced by British reggae personality Tony Williams. The extraordinarily dubby “Champagne Mix ” is included here).

The dub mixes typically appeared on the B-side of the main mix – for the first time providing the DJ totally different takes on a single song. Their rhythm-heavy minimalism and freedom from traditional song structures went on to influence all of dance music down the line (the blueprints for house & techno were just a few years away).

This mix is a selection of personal faves from this fascinating era.
