Not too long ago I attended an online retreat with Joseph Goldstein, cofounder and guiding teacher at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts. I've sat with Joseph on retreats before, but what really struck me this time were the repetitive patterns playing out in my mind and body, whether it was getting lost in stories and caught up in self-judgment, or simply being distracted by physical pain—all pretty common experiences on a meditation retreat.

In today’s episode, I sit down with Joseph, who recently emerged from a 3-month silent retreat himself, to ask him some questions that have been at the top of my mind. We’ll talk about the value and challenges of a long retreat, the wisdom of investigation and curiosity, and why we need to make more room for joy and humor on retreat and off. At the end of our conversation, Joseph will lead us in a brief mindfulness meditation to re-ground ourselves in the present moment.

Live studio  improvisation with Miguel Yanover on sax (@yanomito), I played a nylon-string electric bass.
We jammed over a pre recorded (by me) drum track and later I overdubbed a Hammond Organ trying to save this one from the trash lid.

Still, even if I love the live sax and bass interplay, this is a great candidate to be a  "forever unused" track. So I'm glad to mix it this morning and share it here.

In August 2017 Lama Jampa gave two days of teachings on interdependence at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling Buddhist Centre in France. This recording is of the morning teaching on the first day.
The Buddha showed the absence of reality of all phenomena; it remains the case that what we experience seems to truly exist on a relative level. The teaching on interdependence takes this double truth into account and allows us to access a clear understanding of the world as it manifests whilst also recognising its illusory nature.

The Four Dharmas of Gampopa is an explanation of Gampopa’s four-line teaching which provides an overview of the path of mixed sutra and tantra. It begins with contemplation of the four thoughts, progresses through the preliminary, development and completion practices of Vajrayana, and culminates in Mahamudra and Dzokchen, the supreme meditations of the Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

Lama Jampa Thaye is a scholar and meditation master trained in the Sakya and Karma Kagyu traditions of Buddhism.  His principal masters are His Holiness Sakya Trizin and Karma Thinley Rinpoche.  Lama Jampa Thaye is one of a handful of western teachers to have mastered, and been granted permission to transmit, the authentic teachings of the Buddha.  He holds a doctorate from the University of Manchester for his work on Tibetan religious history and is married with four children.  His teaching style is characterised by his erudition and gentle humour, which illuminate the wisdom of the Buddha's timeless teachings. His daily life consists of study, composition and teaching: he is untiring in his efforts to raise the victory banner of the glorious dharma.
