Who is Manjushri? He is said to have been born in Mt Wutai in China and to have founded the city of Kathmandu in Nepal. He appears as an ordinary lay disciple and as a representative of the Buddha. He appears as white, orange, black and even as the child of a turtle. In fact, Manjushri has no colour, no shape, no beginning nor end, but resides within all of us, even in the donkeys and the grass they are eating. If we want to see Manjushri, we only need to call his name.

The Heart Sutra or Prajñāpāramitā is the quintessence of the Mahayana teachings. This sutra can protect us from all the problems caused by our deluded conceptions of this mundane world. Our projections lead to action and action to reaction, to create an ordered system: samsara. “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form” gives us the tools to destabilise samsara and find liberation, but we can only experience this emptiness directly through practice. Meditation is a method for us to access the wisdom of emptiness but eventually must itself be deconstructed, just as a boat is abandoned once we reach the other shore.

Rinpoche teaches how, by engaging in the key practices of the Mahayana path along with making the vast bodhisattva aspiration to gain awakening for the benefit of all sentient beings, we can accomplish both short-term happiness and the lasting happiness of fully awakened buddhahood for ourselves and all beings.
