This time we tackle the thorny issue of how you get anything done when you're not allowed to change anything. If the idea of immutability seems strange or even impossible, then we've got you covered.

To write a program is to deal with uncertainty. Sometimes it feels like there's nothing we can count on and null (or undefined) is as pervasive as any other construct in our languages. However this does not have to be! LambdaCast dives into the thorny problem of null, and more broadly the potential for values not to exist and offers up some alternatives.

6: Null And Friends

Oh category theory, bastion of strange and wonderful terminology, (some might say terrible and inaccessible). Love it or hate it, you're likely to run into some terms from category theory if you spend enough time in FP land. In this episode we'll tackle some of the terms that make up the 'ism family of terms, morphism, endomorphism, isomorphism, homomorphism, and catamorphism.

9: Polymorphism And Abstraction

Partial application and currying are a feature that is often mysterious to the uninitiated. Why do functional programmers care about such a seemingly useless thing? 10: Partial Application

Jonas Bonér, CTO of LightBend and creator Akka, discusses using Akka when developing distributed systems. He talks about the Actor Model, and how every Microservice needs to be viewed as a system to be successful. 

Why listen to this podcast:

 - Akka is JVM-based framework design for developing distributed systems leveraging the Actor Model - an approach for writing concurrent systems that treat actors as universal primitives and the most successful model with abstraction has been streaming
 - Circuit breakers in Akka are a backup and retry policy; they protect you by capturing failure data and allow you to roll back 
 - Every Microservice needs to be viewed as a system, it needs to have multiple parts that run on different machines in order to function and be fully resilient - thus is a Microsystem
 - Two different trends have emerged when it comes to hardware and environments: one is the trend toward Multi-core, the is a movement toward virtualized environments and the cloud
 - Saga pattern of managing long running transactions in a distributed system fits very well with messaging style architectures

Jonas Bonér on the Actor Model, Akka, Reactive Programming, Microservices and Distributed Systems

Rodney Urquhart grew up in a North Philly neighborhood ridden with gang violence and effects of the crack epidemic. After seeing people around him get involved with gangs and crime, he realized that staying in high school would result in getting arrested or shot. 

At 16, Rodney dropped out of high school and moved in with his grand mother. Being a high school dropout and having no college degree, Rodney had his fair share of companies casting doubt on his ability. But his willingness to learn and work well with others was what got him to create an impressive company portfolio including Comcast, Microsoft’s Yammer, and ThoughtWorks. He didn’t just want to survive, he wanted to thrive. 

Rodney currently heads the test infrastructure team at Slack. He is also part of a program called /dev/color, a non-profit organization that aims to maximize the impact of Black software engineers in the tech space.
