The Last To Know

Hello…….. so many goodbyes in this life, maybe more than hellos? But who’s counting? Not me. I was pondering about some of my more difficult goodbyes. Some happy, some sad, some angry, some glad… (OK there’s the chorus you won’t hear.) Ha. Another short song. For whatever reason, there are some goodbyes that are more difficult to live with than others. This song is about a particularly difficult goodbye. I’ll leave it at that. What about some of your goodbyes? How did they go? As far as the instruments I played on this song, I must say I do like noodling about on the recorder and also on mandolin. They are both instruments I can play without thinking much about notes, or technical musical matters… Although probably obvious to any recorder or mandolin player is the fact that I do not really know the particulars of the instruments yet…. And maybe never will, but it is sure fun nonetheless. In outdoor news, I watched a large flock of house sparrows swarm into the lilac hedgerow. They were so noisy, all of them chattering. I wondered what they were up to. Later, I heard some chickadees scolding. So I went to look for a cat behind the lilacs. Didn't see one, so I sat in my old chair on the porch listening to the sparrows. The chickadees were still annoyed, so I stood up. There was a fledgling goshawk sitting right there on the top beam of the old swingset facing the lilacs. All the sparrows were now quiet. So I walked over, and at first the hawk didn't see me. I was really close. The hawk finally turned its head to see me, then quickly swooped up and over the fence. All the sparrows quietly made a break for it. Gather the goshawk couldn't get at the sparrows when they were in the lilacs. I do see feather piles here and there as I walk around. I found the dynamics of survival so telling while the hawk and sparrows played cat and mouse. And the parallels to humans were uncanny. Thanks for dropping by, Mark

Bringing back a song I wrote nearly seven years ago. The American soul -- we like to tell lots of good stories about ourselves. Here's one that's not so good -- the account of the Moore's Ford Lynchings, in which a Black WWII veteran and his pregnant wife were murdered. No one was ever convicted of the crimes. How much of this same cruel spirit is still with us now?

I Will Be Redeemed

Ah…. So human. That’s me. This song comes from a poem I wrote with a newly penned second verse. And aren’t you lucky there is some more homemade percussion. Ha. (I need to learn bass guitar too…) Hope you like the song. In outdoor news: Many birds like waxwings and robins that make this place a migration stop, to feed on the berries, are long gone as they continue on their migration routes... It is so funny, these chickadees are all over the yard now, so I have been whistling their 'wood pewee' birdcall when I see them. And a downy woodpecker has been relentlessly pecking on the side of my house as there are tiny bees that have burrowed into the wood, leaving eggs, and then other insects take up residence there too. A culinary feast for the woodpecker. There's spots where that woodpecker has hammered several holes. Luckily not very deep. A couple years ago, I recorded another woodpecker hammering and used that as percussion for a song. Ha. So now, I am scrambling to get the last of the autumn chores done before winter hits. Collecting seeds, winterizing perennial beds, adding compost to the vegetable garden, and mulching around all the trees, shrubs and raspberries, while harvesting the last of the kale, leeks, cabbages, and whatnot, that can survive in these freezing temps now. The Blue Room – smoke and whisky and tears….

The original idea was a smoky, jazzy, late night club-for-lonely-hearts kind of thing.  But since my “jazz” piano always ends up honky-tonk, and I can’t seem to lose the backwoods in my voice, the final product – though still smoky & late night – is more lonely hearts beer joint than jazz club.  Jazzabilly maybe.  Redneck Blues. 
								
But there is a plan to give the song a little jazz credibility.  I play an organ solo mid-song that I actually wrote for saxophone.  I’m sending the song to my little brother, longtime Atlanta musician Herb Avery, who says he knows a sax player who’ll take it on.  So if Herbert can make that happen, I’ll upload the new version later.  If he can’t, I’ll be looking for a sax player out there.  And yes, for now I’m keeping the sax player pic posted, to remind me to get this done.

My daughter Julia helped out vocally on the choral refrain.

So here we go.  Come set for a spell in The Blue Room…..when nobody loves you.
