LAWAAI is an Amsterdam-based DJ collective which champions non-binary and femme-identifying artists. We wanted to make some noise and create a space for more diversity in the Amsterdam music scene, by simply providing opportunities to let more femme-identifying or non-binary artists shine. So far, we’ve been doing this by organizing events at venues like Feed, Sexyland and Toekomstmuziek, and sharing this platform with a growing network of local femme-identifying and non-binary artists.

LAWAAI w/ LAN, INA & LENI - 29th June 2023

Camikazy Uzi is a vocal lyricist, producer, DJ, model and label owner from Paris, with Cameroonian and Ivorian heritage. She is super excited to LAWAAI’s radio show at Black Rhino Radio today. Empowering female and non-binary artists is what she does. She was drawn to music from a young age, using it as a medium to express her emotions and life experiences. Influenced by a diverse range of music, including artists like Biggy, The Fugees, Jeff Mills, Mr Oizo, and Miss Kittin, she embraced a deep connection to rhythm and mesmerizing vocals. In 2014, she relocated to Amsterdam to pursue her professional career. Starting as a producer in 2018, she later moved to Barcelona, where she released her self-produced single "Le Temps Sepa" (Time is Passing By). In 2020, she embarked on a DJ career, performing in various clubs and events in Amsterdam and Barcelona. Camikazy Uzi is known for her energetic presence and diverse music selection, spanning from Funky/Disco to Deep/Minimal/Tech House.

On 1st December last year, we launched the first LAWAAI event with a womens’ rights fundraiser at a local club Sexyland. We’re grateful for all the support from the events we organized so far. With the upcoming 1st LAWAAI anniversary, LENI and LAN put together another 2 hours set for Black Rhino Radio with tracks exclusively produced by female or nonbinary artists. It's a selection of house, Afro house,breaks, bass, and electro. We believe in the power of music to unite people and will continue to make some noise for the good cause.

To celebrate tomorrow International Women’s  Day, @LAWAAI.collective puts together a 2 hours radio show today with full FLINTA production. First hour is hosted by @LAN The Wireless, followed by the second hour from the guest DJ Arianne from @Women at work. Women at work is a DJ duo based in both London and Amsterdam. Bellow are some words from Arianne @Women at Work:

"Having the joy of working with LAWAAI in the past, I know that these women are doing incredible work pushing the boundaries within the music scene. It was a challenge to produce a mix which not only represented my own tastes, but also had a structural impact by using music predominantly from non-cis-male producers. I enjoyed this process though, as it resulted in one of my most conscientious sets to date. For me, equal representation is something that can only be measured or quantified to a certain point. While seeing more women, non-binary folk, and people of colour on line ups or in spaces is important, it is about creating a change that is not just a box ticking process. It's about people being seen for their music, their abilities, and themselves. It's about them feeling empowered in the spaces that they occupy.
I grew up in the male dominated underground scene which has not been an entirely negative experience but could sometimes feel exclusionary. Throughout my time listening to and engaging with music, people around me have had lengthy discussions about different genres (for which I do still love to get involved in). At times, these conversations would feel like a means for men to exert power by demonstrating their knowledge and expertise, causing me to take a step back. Recently, however, I have seen countless women and non-binary people push the boundaries of their sets, not sticking to one sphere of expertise, and instead bringing together similar elements of music across a range of styles. In this set, I hope I have captured what is my ever-evolving musical style, which is not subjected to any strictly delineated patriarchal boundaries i.e genre."

Zsa Zsa
As a dance performer, her profound bond with the physical expression of music translates into her sets - her understanding of the movement between beats and melodies. In the realm of contrasts, she weaves through the shadows of intense dark grooves, then emerges into the light with uplifting moments, creating a journey that evokes both the mysterious and the euphoric. In her mixes she rather focuses on the aesthetics then aiming for a specific genre.

Small note from her: "Big bless to have been invited by these amazing women of LAWAAI to play my small but very important role and contribute to spreading the sound of non-cis male artists to the world and giving them deserved attention. Enough creativity has already been wasted in this scene due to gender inequality."

The second hour is all Lena Rigel: an Amsterdam-based music producer and DJ who focuses on unpredicted storytelling and deep energy exchange. Her original sound usually dances around vibrant distorted sequences, layered drums, and harmonic vocals, while her sets go through an energetic blend of electro, tech house, and breakbeat.

Some words from Lena about her mix:
"I challenged myself to find releases and edits exclusively produced or co-produced by both established and upcoming female artists. While creating this set I wanted to dive into experimental areas of electronic music and try to extract how women express different emotions through sounds. It came as a wonderland full of beauty and mysteries, yet an emotional battlefield, where we have to be assertive over and over again and often work twice as hard to achieve certain things."
