By now counting more than four decades of constant activity, Pierre Bastien erected such a towering and influential body of work that any blurb attempt regarding his music could easily fall into redundancy. Not that his revolving soundworld, deeply personal and unique, has ever stalled into gimmick or self mimicry, being Bastien the tireless explorer whose vision can never be complete, only continuously redefined in a process of discovery equally playful and challenging. So, completely in touch with Discrepant’s ethos.

Returning to the label after 2017 The Mecanocentric Worlds of Pierre Bastien, the french musician, composer and instrument builder, brings an array of instruments from different cartographies and legacies with the appropriately titled Sonic Folkways. Resorting to different types of horns, prepared trumpet, an army of percussion, from gongs and tambourine to castanets and maracas, violin and too many others to mention here, Bastien weaves together a highly textured and hypnotic mosaic that projects an exotica beamed from scraps of the future. ‘Aha!’ in the same interstellar wavelength as Sun Ra’s cosmic tones, ‘Moor’s Room’s almost orchestral tapestry of small percussion and insects or the non-western strings and tunings salvaged from ancient alien ceremonies on ‘Pan’s Nap’.

In an era where so much ink has been shed about world building in experimental music, Bastien can actually claim that to himself. The otherworld is right here, indeed.

“Tenderness” is the first collaborative album between Japanese musician Yumi Iwaki and Brazilian Carlos Ferreira using unreleased sketches, improvisations, and samples, “Tenderness” is a mosaic of painted sounds that does not end in itself, inviting the listener to inhabit its center.

Porto Alegre based experimental guitarist Carlos Ferreira and Tokyo-based synthesizer hypnotist Yumi Iwaki are presenting "Tenderness" , their first ever collaborative album through Modern Obscure Music. Carlos and Yumi have created this powerful ambient odyssey at the distance. Despite some connections between Yumi's family roots with the Brazilian musical scene, both artists feel a strong attraction about their cultural differences, through Literature, films, scents, colors, and nature… Carlos feels “there are infinite cultural differences between Japan and Brazil, and this can be explained by historical and even geographical factors, but people come together through very strong elements that are able to transcend these differences. Diversity must also unite us.”. In "Lampbound”, you embark on a retro video game journey as Max, an ordinary guy who stumbles upon a mysterious genie's lamp. In an unexpected twist, Max is magically pulled into the lamp and finds himself trapped within a fantastical world. With the genie's powers at his disposal, he must navigate through a labyrinthine maze of perilous puzzles, treacherous platforms, and enigmatic creatures to escape the lamp's confines.

As Max progresses, he uncovers hidden secrets and acquires unique abilities granted by the genie. These powers enable him to manipulate the environment, such as freezing time, conjuring temporary platforms, and transforming into different forms. Careful planning and clever utilization of these newfound skills are crucial to overcoming the various challenges that lie ahead.

Throughout the game, Max encounters eccentric characters, both helpful and mischievous, who offer cryptic advice or attempt to hinder his escape.

As Max inches closer to his freedom, he unravels the genie's backstory, uncovering the truth behind his entrapment and the enigmatic origins of the lamp. Will Max triumph over the lamp's ancient magic and find his way back to reality, or will he remain trapped within its confines forever?

1. Lampbound Foyer: Max begins his adventure in the grand entrance of the lamp, facing introductory puzzles and obstacles while learning the game mechanics.

2. Wishful Woods: Max ventures into a mystical forest within the lamp, navigating through dense foliage, avoiding traps, and solving nature-themed puzzles.

3. Crystal Caverns: Max explores a series of shimmering caves adorned with crystals. He must traverse slippery platforms, dodge falling stalactites, and unravel puzzles involving light reflection.

4. Clockwork Citadel: Max finds himself in a clockwork-themed fortress, where he must manipulate gears, overcome timing-based obstacles, and solve intricate clock puzzles.

5. Mirage Oasis: Max encounters an illusionary oasis filled with mirages and sand-based challenges. He must decipher the real pathways, avoid mirage traps, and cleverly utilize sand-based mechanics.

6. Haunted Halls: Max enters a spooky section of the lamp, haunted by mischievous spirits and ghostly puzzles. He must outwit the apparitions and navigate through ethereal environments.

7. Elemental Chambers: Max enters a series of elemental chambers representing different powers. He must master the elements, such as fire, water, and wind, to progress and overcome elemental puzzles.

8. Genie's Sanctum: Max reaches the heart of the lamp, a majestic chamber housing the powerful genie. He must face the ultimate test, a climactic showdown with the genie, combining all his skills and knowledge.

mono no aware (もののあわれ) is the first compilation to be released on PAN, collating unreleased ambient tracks from both new and existing PAN artists.

Featuring Jeff Witscher, Helm, TCF, Yves Tumor, M.E.S.H., Pan Daijing, HVAD, Kareem Lotfy, ADR, Mya Gomez, Sky H1, James K, Oli XL, Bill Kouligas, Flora Yin-Wong, Malibu, and AYYA, the compilation moves through more traditional notions of what is called ’ambient’, to incorporating wider variations that fall under the term.

“Mono no aware”, ‘the pathos of things’, also translates as “an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera”. A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present.

The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, featuring photography by Molly Matalon and design by Bill Kouligas. A limited version of 100 copies will be released as a special art edition in collaboration with Mount Analog for the LA Art Book Fair 2017, before going on general release.

3. Yves Tumor - Limerence (PAN 77)

"The Diary Of The Second Officer" has been created in various parts of the world. I travelled with my mini setup: laptop, headphones, 3 octave midi keyboard and hand recorder. Field recordings are from the Batumi Botanical Garden, from road trips, as well as from a Georgian village called Chibati, and other places I deemed inspiring enough to capture in should and mood. Sounds for the "Moved By" tracks were recorded in a car, ship and airplane accordingly, with my hand recorder. Sampled recorded sounds are from airports in Istanbul and Singapore. The city soundscapes of Batumi, Singapore and Kagoshima are also present on this album."
