Six months later, I was still pulling my hair out in some kind of quest to make the perfect mix. As someone who has never really done mixes before, I learned a lot of things along the way and the whole experience was very inspiring. I decided to approach the mix in a similar way as I would one of my scores. This is the soundtrack of my life. I included songs from many of my friends and collaborators and tried to deliver a mix that represents who I am as an artist and where my influences are coming from - both personally and musically.”

The Further In the Deeper

Ian Lynch is a member of Lynched, perhaps the most thrilling Irish folk band to have emerged in recent years. 
BBC Radio 2 Folk Show presenter Mark Ratcliffe said: "They mark a turning point in folk, that authentic voice of the streets is back in a big way," while his legendary predecessor, Mike Harding, asserted they are, "the most convincing folk band to come out of Ireland in years."
Ian along with his brother Daragh, both former stalwarts of the punk music scene, formed Lynched in the early part of this decade with fiddler Cormac Mac Diarmada and multi-instrumentalist Radie Peat.
They quickly established themselves as 'Dublin folk miscreants', a raggle taggle four piece breathing new life into a repertoire of classic songs, forgotten bawdy musical hall sing-alongs, anti-establishment ballads as well as their own original compositions.
Their most recent album, Cold Old Fire, was described by the Guardian as "The most exciting album of traditional Irish song in decades."
At their best, they are an exhilarating live proposition and they will be playing the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Rooms on October 15 as part of the 2016 Liverpool Irish Festival.
Ian talks about the thrill of playing in such a great band, what Irish music means to the emigrants they meet across the world and the emotional authenticity of singing in your own accent.

Chuala mé an dara port ó Alan Morrisroe, boscadóir spleodrach as Béal Átha na Muice, Condae Mhaigh Eo, a bhfuil go leor poirt neamhchoitianta aige chomh maith le heolas cuimsitheach ar cheoltóirí Connachta. Fuair seisean an port seo óna chara Paddy Joe Tighe, boscadóir iontach as Achadh Mór in oirthear Mhaigh Eo.
Fuair mé an tríú port ó thaifead RTÉ de Thomáisín Pheaits Ó Ceannabháin, sárbhoscadóir as an Aird Mhóir, Conamara. Sean-stíl an mhileóidian a bhí aige. I have heard several musicians play ‘The Old Dúidín’ over the years, but I associate it mainly with the fiddle player Paddy Killoran. I heard his version of the tune on the ‘Tuning the Radio’ compilation that RTÉ released in 2010, a recording which was brought to my attention by Eoin Ó Beaglaoich.
I heard the second tune from Alan Morrisroe, a great accordion player from Swinford, Co. Mayo. He has many unusual versions of tunes and a great knowledge of Connacht musicians in particular. He got this tune from his friend Paddy Joe Tighe, another great accordion player from Aghamore in east Mayo. I got the third tune from a RTÉ recording of Tomáisín Pheaits Ó Ceannabháin, a fantastic accordion player from Ardmore in Connemara. He played in the old melodeon style. Séamus Ennis and Johnny Spillane recorded him in 1948. This tune is often played for dancers but I have never heard anyone else play this version except for Tomáisín’s nephew, the piper Tommy Pheait Pheaits Ó Ceannabháin, who passed away before Christmas 2015; may he rest in peace. His brother Páraic is a great flute player and they played many unusual tunes for us over the years when we visited them. Fantastic musicians and always generous and welcoming.

The Old Dúidín, Tighes Rare Reel, Joe Mháire Mhicilín

I learned this song from John Doherty's album "The Celebrated Recordings". I was listening to Pádraig O' Keeffe non-stop at the time and was amazed by his playing of the air "The Old Man Rocking the Cradle" on the album "Kerry Fiddles". It struck me as more of a descriptive piece than an air. Especially because of the "wa-wa"/"ma-ma" cry of the baby that Pádraig created by holding an old metal key in his mouth and placing it on the bridge of the fiddle. 
I thought that the air and the song belonged together and so I attempted to structure the air as a descriptive piece depicting the mood of the song.

The Old Man Rocking The Cradle (Song)

I learned this song from a recording of Tom Lenihan which can be found on Clare County Library's website. Around the time of learning I was becoming progressively more and more influenced by the madness of Neillidh Boyle's slow air playing. So much so that I began hearing his elaborate style in my head while listening to the ornamentation styles of certain singers, of whom Tom Lenihan was one. For this reason, it made sense (at the time at least) to put the two together.

"Robert Emmett, who was executed in 1803 for his part in an abortive uprising which took place earlier that year, inspired several songs. This one takes the form of a ‘goodnight ballad’, a genre of song long established in England, where a condemned man employed a ‘broadside hack’ to take down the details of his life and turn them into verse form; they were often sold on song-sheets at public hangings. According to the writer, Daniel Defoe, the term ‘goodnight ballad’ originated from the practice of those viewing the execution calling out ‘goodnight' as the rope tightened around the condemned man’s neck. Tom learned the song from his mother."

Emmet's Farewell (Song)

The first reel in this set was written by the prolific composer and accordionist, Paddy O’Brien (1922-91), from Newtown in Co. Tipperary. I learned it from banjo player, Theresa O’Grady, in one of the many sessions that we have played at the South Sligo Summer School in Tubbercurry, one of my homes-away- from-home. A favourite of Sligo fiddlers, Michael Coleman (1891-1945), and James ‘Lad’ O’Beirne (1911-80), ‘The Flowery Fields of Scotland’ is a reel that I associate with the great Brian Rooney from Kiltyclogher in Co. Leitrim. He recorded it as ‘Brian Rooney’s’ on The Goldfather in 1998, and it appears on the album Within a Mile of Kilty (2005) under the title listed here. ‘The Sailor on the Rock’ is a popular reel that appears as tune #559 in O’Neill’s 1001 or The Dance Music of Ireland (1907) under the curiously enigmatic title of ‘Johnny with the Queer Thing’. The Holy Ghosts (2016)

Recorded in the winter of 2002 in a small suburban bedroom on Dublin's northside, this was the final track on the first installment in the Lynched discography.
A slightly more experimental approach was used, with a child's violin being employed, guitar strings being played with a bow and an uncharacteristic use of digital effects.
Perhaps unsurprisingly for the group, it charts the demise of the ruling classes through the metaphorical imagery of drowning pigs.

So I have another life as a folk musician (stick in the wheel), and because of that I got to do a remix for folk singer Eliza Carthy's latest album. One of the tracks was an acapella performance by Dizraeli, who's an MC from Bristol. I used that track then chopped up another track from the album for the sample.

Its really good to be able to work on something with such a positive message. 

We all gotta give thanks innit.
