04. I'm Here Again (Young Pulse Retouch)

Originally released in South Africa in 1984 and produced by Jabu Sibumbe of Stimela fame. 

Difficult to find on vinyl, which saw only small pressings at the time of release, these works are now remastered and reissued for the first time, for release both on vinyl and digital format. 

This original versions show off some of the glossy disco & boogie-funk vibes that were being produced in South Africa in the mid-eighties, inspired by sounds being imported from the US and Europe at that time.

Joi N'Juno steps up for his first remix on Canopy, channelling the attitude of Quincy & Niles to create a dynamic arrangement that takes the original and reinvents it for modern disco-house dance floors. Live synth, keys and horns add to the crisp and warm production for what looks to become a modern day classic.

Razor N Tapes' JKriv stays truer to the original and with his characteristic production finesse modernises the originals to tastefully update them for contemporary sound systems, bringing just the right balance of past and present to add a new dimension to these boogie gems.

Cosmic Boogie asked me to put a mix together for his re-launched blog so I put this edit together as a little exclusive for the mix and thought I'd share it here seeing as the original version (either on Chicago's Gherkin or or Italy's D-Vision) is currently changing hands for £40 plus on Discogs!

Released back in 1991, it's still for me one of the most seductive house records ever...

A few things gigwise for February. As well as the usual bit's at West London's 'The Regent' and East London's 'Big In Japan' night, I'm also playing for the Shameless Disco boy's at The Drop in Stoke Newington alongside rising star Ben Sun, really looking forward to that.

I was a big fan of ‘Stop Making Sense’, the Talking Heads concert from 1984, which was released as both a film and an album. It starts with David Byrne on an empty stage with just a ghetto blaster and acoustic guitar, performing one of the band’s best-known tracks, ‘Psycho Killer, which was originally released in 1977. The beats, courtesy of a Roland TR-808 drum machine, re-appear in extended form over the closing credits. The idea of an edit was there from the moment I bought ‘Stop Making Sense’ on VHS back in the 80’s, but the sound quality from the video wouldn’t have been up to scratch. However, when it was released on DVD later down the line, this was no longer a problem, and I was able to let the beats run on their own for a couple of minutes before the guitar enters and the track really kicks in.

The edit took off in a big way for me, and later with DJ’s including Andrew Weatherall and Optimo. It subsequently became a major festival tune for me and featured in my Essential Mix in 2009 (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/essential-mix-greg-wilson-mix-for-bbc-radio-1). More recently it appeared on my Festival Anthems mix (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/greg-wilson-festival-anthems), and given this, I thought it was a good time to share here.
