There's something about Mike and Joginda's music that catches the attention right away – their flow's probably stronger and faster than any river issues into the sea and there are quite some rivers in their hometown Rotterdam. Joginda and Mike, better known under their artist moniker Black Cadmium, have been involved in the electronic music for years – decades to be precise - in the one or the other way, but it took the both until 2019 to finally get things going for them and craft their forces. From then on the duo's way has known – at least in the eyes of the public – only one direction: up! Releases on Ovum, Naive, Vault Wax or and most recently their Inertia EP on Transient Nature are not only an expression of their success but also show their musical diversity or simply underline the duo's knowledge and understanding of electronic music's origins and roots, something the two find essential in order to grasp the big(ger) picture. Shortly after the release of the beforementioned EP on Transient Nature, Black Cadmium gave Torture the Artist some insights into their minds, lives, (studio) approaches, places to hang out in Rotterdam and how everything culminated into being who they are, what they do and how they deal with matters that concern Black Cadmium. Additionally Mike and Joginda compiled the latest edition of the art:cast special series – certainly as deep and diverse as one would expect and a soundtrack for any state of mind or season.

2022 may bring much much uncertainty to the world but one thing we know for a fact is that we are introducing our most innovative and intriguing new act in years – the French duo Archil & Leon with their five track debut (appropriately called) “Blooming”.

Having both released in the past independently, Archil & Leon were originally brought together thanks to their teenage band His Majesty and from there, their passion to create music together never has faltered. Leon is a veteran session and live drummer who also produces music for his own dance project Ongaeshi and the dance collective moovance. Archil is an accomplished solo electronic musician and the force behind Archil Lab handmade musical devices. Using elements like springs (Springophone) and wheels (Roulettophone), his instruments are lovingly manufactured in wood and somehow carry the characteristics of modular gear but in the most unconventional way possible.

At a first listen, Archil & Leon’s music comes off as a well oiled live jam but as you dig deeper, it’s clear these tracks have a precision and style that separates them into a category of their own. Their EP “Blooming” is the result of two full years of being locked in their studio, writing and experimenting together. Indeed, an underlying flow of 70’s funk permeates throughout their music, however pigeonholing them into such a stereotype would be a travesty as they have impeccable song writing skills and their self made instruments conjure an experimentalism which is through and through rooted in electronic music. We can only hope that fans of now-classic Jamie Lidell / Super_Collider will appreciate where they are coming from, and you agree their “sound” is brilliantly individual. After all, they created their tracks literally from the ground up.

Oslo label Badabing Diskos follows its glorious first release with a new EP from Sommerfeldt, who offers up his most club-ready sound with Sigmund Floyd's dreamy vocals.
Opener 'Overloved' was written as a mellow yet uplifting love song in response to the present absurdities in the world. It is a stylish seven-minute house lullaby with heavenly vocals and heartwarming pads. The drums are warm and shuffle smoothly down low while emotive pads convey real tenderness.

Danish Dynamite they call call their national football team. Dynamite we call Copenhagen-based artist Sexy Lazer's latest EP on Riotvan Mr. Lava Lava, which probably namely orientates itself towards Shaggy's Reggae ear worm Mr. Bombastic from 95. However, rumors have it that Reggae and Dub-love Axel Boman took on remix duties for Sexy Lazer's track Fluting In Space for exactly those "shagging" reasons. The result is a smoking, pardon fluting downtempo track that prepares one for cosmic experiences within its five minutes living up the expectations the track title suggests. Additionally, Boman slows down the vocals, if not to say he reworks them in good ol' DJ Screw-manner, making them a tempo-wise as well as a musically fit for his approach and ultimately delivers a cut that deserves the remix attribute as it widens the listener's horizon by another (musical) facet.

The long-running Kompakt imprint will release an EP by German DJ and producer Sascha Funke in September. Sharing five tracks that traverse quirky house and techno, Treets marks Funke’s monumental return to Kompakt since his Zug um Zug two-tracker in 2014.

Speaking about Treets, Funke says he is "very happy to be back on the mothership Kompakt" after an eight-year break. As one would expect with Funke, the EP fits the cosmic world of Kompakt to a tee. The title track conveys a weird, tripped-out atmosphere as an alien-like vocal burbles between an acid bassline and squeaky percussion. It's a tantalising glimpse of Funke's freaky underworld. E_Plus follows a similar wonked-out vein, only this time, the vibe is ominous. Funke pairs an orchestral vocal with bleepy pads and signature acid-drenched melody — a solid offering oddball of energy. On Alles Paletti, a 2-step drum pattern and string of bright claps create a sunny soundscape, complemented by a robust bassline and ethereal synth notes. It's fairytale house music, the kind only Funke can produce. The penultimate track Haus More is subdued, as chugging drums slither between a wobbly melody. The Other Version feels futuristic, as Funke goes full-force electro. Extra-terrestrial vocals return, but the pace is cranked up by strident sound FX and thudding drums. An eccentric end to an eccentric EP.

Sascha Funke is a Berlin-based producer and DJ with two decades' worth of releases building his back catalogue. BPitch Control, Turbo Recordings, Endless Flight, Running Back, and several more esteemed imprints have released his work. Today, he continues to create sleek sounds that weave various genres from house, techno, disco, Krautrock, wave, electro and unclassified anomalies. As a DJ, Funke is just as free-wheeling as his productions. He's played E1 in London, Caos in São Paulo and Renate in Berlin, amongst others, displaying his sweeping sound to a worldwide audience. Having been exposed to euro-dance pop as a youngster, you can hear flashes from the genre stitched throughout his work but blended in a way that's quintessential to Funke. Never one to change his sound according to the latest trend, Funke stays true to his creative vision — one of the most significant challenges for producers today.
