Dr William Lemmon ran the Institute for Primate Studies and was known for his special brand of cruelty towards his chimpanzee "subjects".  I wrote this song after learning about Lemmon in Roger Fouts' book, Next of Kin" and through other sources. I felt compelled to out this revered doctor who was a sadistic, fame-and-power hungry man.  Everything in the song is true, including Lemmon making the chimpanzees bow down and kiss his ring. Roger Fouts was able to save only some of the sign language chimpanzees he worked with in Dr. Lemmon's program. These chimps had been raised like human children yet Lemmon sold as many as he could into the nightmarish world of research.

"The little green blackbird" is a character from a book of poems by Kenneth Patchen titled Because It Is, which inspired the songs, as did "The Wizard Of Oz," and other works.
Starting off with "Sing Hallelujah" Beatle-esque hints, layers and textures emerge, and an intriguing mood pervades, like an invitation to go to some secret, magical new place. Not one in a million, "One In A Thousand" is perfectly powered by upright bass (Erik Hammarberg) and soon Gholson sings to a wayward lover "Say what you might, it won't be a pretty sight/cause I've learned how to bite." "Happy and Free" is wide open to possibilities and cautiously hopeful, while the spare "For Ally (Lost in The Maze)" is more melancholic and 
bittersweet, yet the jazzy "Before You Go" is a pleasing departure. The production and arrangements here are inventive and impeccable, and Gholson's sweet voice is gorgeous, emotional and flexible. Even better are her well-crafted songs about life and love that dig far deeper then most.
Certainly the best regional recording of the year, "the summer I stopped whining" is a thoughtful, quiet masterpiece…"

2. THE COLOURFIELD was a British new wave band fronted by Terry Hall, formerly singer with The Specials. Their biggest hit 'Thinking of You' reached no 12 in the UK charts

3. LUMINOUS FRENZY is a contemporary British band. Their track 'McEmotion' from the album Violence Ambience was featured in the film 'McLibel' (recently selected by the UK's Channel 4 as one of the 'Best films of the Noughties')

4. THE STYLE COUNCIL was a successful British band formed by Paul Weller ex singer with The Jam. They had a string of hits including one in the US with 'My Ever Changing Moods'

5. ROBERT WYATT is a hugely respected and influential British solo artist (formerly of Soft Machine) who has inspired bands like Tears for Fears and recently collaborated with Bjork and Dave Gilmour

6. THE PLAYTHINGS were a British indie band who recorded the album 'Consumed' in 1991, with mesmerising lyrics by singer Tina Irving.
