No mountains to climb searching for riches

THE WORDS I NEVER FOUND

East on the I-16 across the Oconee
with her by my side softly singing

I first saw her standing in the crowd  
as the band played “Night Swimming”

Soon the billboards showed pictures of the sea
Walking by the water's edge I dreamt of all that we could be

Now sometimes the radio plays the song
and the years fall from me and I still see her

Some memories are stones in our shoes
with each new step the cut goes deeper

Outside my Northern home the snow falls to the ground
while I'm alone inside with the words I never found

SOUTHERN PRINCESS

Years of home school where magnolias and the Lord's prayer reach for the sky
You were taught faith in the good book and to never doubt or ask why

Through long sleepless nights -  forbidden thoughts in constant fights
With a fear of hell - when you were only twelve

Once a Southern Princess in a Kingdom Come
Now so confused by a world undone

A life secretly packed into your car. “I'm too sick for Church” you lied that Sunday
Then your father said ”she's unforgiven” but no guilt or sin could block the highway

Alone and so much to bare - eighteen with a thousand yard stare
