This track was recorded in the fall of 2008 in Oakland CA. Jimmy would come into my work and we'd talk music and books. We talked about our mutual appreciation for Tom Waits and Charles Bukowski. Since those two go hand in hand, it sparked an idea for Jimmy's words and my music. Jimmy was a mysterious character well into his 70's with a jazz cat style and great stories. I never knew or found anyone that knew anything about him. He would mention being around happening names in his past but nothing much. I never saw him enough to actually form anything musically. It was just discussions at the work place about how we could create something.

One night a few weeks after coming up with the idea I received a call from Jimmy very late in the night. I missed the call. I did however wake up to a lengthy voice message with the recordings you hear in these tracks. I instantly loved the way they sounded as if Jimmy was in a telephone booth in a dark part of town in the early morning hours. JAZZ shit. I decided a John Lee Hooker style blues riff could work for what I was hearing. I think Jimmy was hearing something much more jazz influenced! Haha. I was a 25 year old RocknRoller who had only been playing lead guitar for around two years at the time! I had just bought my first Mac and barley new how to use Garageband. The quality is a little questionable but I do like the weird character these have.

Both tracks are intended purely as demo recordings to show the idea I was picturing. We had talked about doing it at a real studio with some jazz musicians. The studio never happened and I was on my way out of the Bay Area. I was never able to show Jimmy what I created. The original voice messages are long gone along with any Garagband files. I did one track with typewriter and Horse racing sound effects, which is one of the main topics of this work. The other one is the extended version of the whole piece. I think I chopped it up to fit the music parts a little better. It was a long time ago and I don't recall the process.

I just recently learned of Jimmy's passing in 2019. I even found a documentary that details a little bit of his time in the 1950's NYC Beat Poet scene! Even pinning lyrics for a Johnny Mathis song! It seems after leaving NYC in the 60's and relocating to Alameda CA, Jimmy dove into his work and never came out. To some it can be a sad ending but to others it's the dream. I always thought of Jimmy as an older energetic writer artist with great style and even better stories. He was always carrying his work with him and always had a smile. RIP Jimmy

Formed in Nashville TN 2015, Lasso Spells debut album "Stuck In A Shape" was released on the Brooklyn based label Cold Fantasy in January of 2017. A self titled 7" single was also released that same year. A follow up LP titled Bohemian Mechanics, was released October 2018. With the addition of Pedal Steel guitar, Bohemian Mechanics melded the influence of classic Country Western music and Fuzz guitars that shaped the Lasso Spells sound from the beginning. Lasso Spells is currently based in Portland Oregon and working on the third LP titled "Love Is The Only Word We Know"
