Garrett Byrnes. I went into this interview like most interviews, interested in the life of a BMXer but not knowing much beyond the person in the photos, documentaries, video parts, etc. This is the reason why I do it. The payoff was huge with Garrett. This is the 1st time I have split a podcast into two parts because there is so much about Garrett that I would love for you all to hear and not feel rushed. Episode 38 Part 2 - Garrett Byrnes

Chris Hallman is a laid back guy that has been involved in more of BMX around the Country than you would ever realize because of his low key personality. Chris has been on Props tours, worked at FBM, Standard and Tread magazine while traveling around the country, basically acting on whatever option came his way. These days he is rooted in midstate as a carpenter and NY caring for the most important priority of his life, his daughter Sylvia. You will hear Sylvia having a great time swimming in the background while Chris and I talk. Chris still actively rides and at 46 is riding at a level to be proud of...in running shoes. You will hear that story in this episode. So unconventional sometimes fits as a description of Chris but so does cancer survivor, depression survivor, great father and good friend to many. Brian Foster Part 1...who would have guessed anyone could nail down BF let alone for over 4-1/2 hours. I feel pretty damn grateful and honored.  We talked about everything from family to education to BMX, of course. These interviews are pretty loose so it allowed BF to digress at will. That made the interview really relaxed to say the least. Next week's episode (Part 2) things get even more entertaining as we talk about everything from the BMX Hall of Fame induction (coming up on September 8th, drugs in BMX, John Purse wrestling matches and more. I’ve been lucky enough to interview a massively diverse range of people since I started the Looking Sideways podcast. And one thing unites them all: the activity might have lured them in; but it was the lifestyle that eventually hooked them.

Yet few guests, if any, have taken their dedication to this chosen lifestyle to the same extreme as Rip Zinger, a self-described travelling monk who has turned couch-surfing into an artform. Rip is from Tokyo and is, in the title of a blogpost written about his lifestyle, ‘a most interesting man’. A skater, snowboarder and, latterly, surfer, he left his home in pursuit of the lifestyle he loves about - and he's still on the road.

 Along the way Rip has racked up several lifetimes worth of incredible experiences, and made himself one of the most well-connected and much loved figures on the scene with a truly ridiculous network of contacts and friends around the world.

He’s also an amazing photographer, who documents the whole scene on Instagram, and has published a couple of books that document his adventures.

I’ve long found Rip’s story intriguing. Sure, we’ve all got mates who have dedicated themselves to their chosen lifestyle with noble single-mindedness - but few have managed it to turn it into such a fascinating life. Sure, the story of action sports is usually told through the lives of the superstars we all know. But characters like Rip, who are the unsung lifeblood of the scene, are just as important when it comes to sustaining our unique culture.

So as my Californian road trip came to an end, I caught up with at his current digs in Cardiff-by-the-Sea to get the whole story. And what a tale it is, uniquely told by one of the scene’s great characters. Enjoy!

Formed in Nashville TN 2015, Lasso Spells debut album "Stuck In A Shape" was released on the Brooklyn based label Cold Fantasy in January of 2017. A self titled 7" single was also released that same year. A follow up LP titled Bohemian Mechanics, was released October 2018. With the addition of Pedal Steel guitar, Bohemian Mechanics melded the influence of classic Country Western music and Fuzz guitars that shaped the Lasso Spells sound from the beginning. Lasso Spells is currently based in Portland Oregon and working on the third LP titled "Love Is The Only Word We Know"
