Anushka’s recent ‘Yemaya’ album for Tru Thoughts has been on solid repeat, so we are very excited to share an exclusive mix from the duo's Max Wheeler, who has put together a special mix linking the early 80s roller boogie sound of LA  with more recent favourites and a couple of exclusives.

Max shared some words about the recording: “This mix was me trying to blow off some cobwebs and remember how to DJ after a long time away from the decks. When I got the tunes together I realised I was really drawn to the super positive sunshine party vibes of the roller boogie stuff and so started with half an hour of that and then got into some electronic bits I’ve been finding inspiring recently before dropping a couple of sneaky exclusive dubs in, including a minimal edit of album track “Serenity” which is one of our faves. Hope you all enjoy it, one to have a low key party to, even if you’re just in your yard.”

"For this mix, I really just tried to start with some of my favorite records that I’ve found in the last few months and build off that. The records span mid 80s to early 90s, and the mix hops around through different vibes and genres; lovers rock, dancehall, boogie, deep house, street soul, highlife, kwaito, soca, etc. Always aiming to keep it both deep and accessible, and of course build a sound around positivity, this time tinged with a little melancholy for the end of summer. MIMS is delighted to present the online premiere of "Currents" by JAB, close to 7 sublime minutes of deep soulful jazz, whose steady rhythms could either carry away our feet on the dancefloor, or lure our thoughts to drift away to its seductive groove.

Following the acclaimed 'Directions' EP and last year's popular '6 Degrees of Separation', the mysterious multi-instrumentalist JAB is due to return with brand new 'Currents' EP on March 19. 

Title track, "Currents" was inspired by the hope glimpsed towards the end of the first lockdown, when restrictions started to ease, for a return to normality. The song opens with the pulse-like drums beating like a heartbeat, creating life as it unfolds, and the strings swoop and organ blossoms, with the bassline excitedly and playfully expressing fluidity. 

JAB tells us that ""Currents" represents movement to me and I think the world moved through many phases of emotions in 2020. Similar to a stream or an ocean you have a spectrum of textures from shallow and light, to deep and heavy.”

Well we can't wait to hear the whole EP. JAB is multi-talented musician, producer, composer and arranged, leading a powerful ensemble on this release. Vinyl and digital drops on March 19.
