The Intermezzo in E-flat Minor (No. 6) from Johannes Brahms's Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118 (1893), as recorded by Romantic pianist-composer Robert Cunningham on May 1, 2023.  The piece is based on the Dies irae chant, used in the funeral liturgy and traditionally associated with visions of death and Judgment Day.  In this Intermezzo the familiar chant is immediately recognizable in the opening measures, and it pervades the whole work.  The middle section of the piece builds to a climax that can only be described as apocalyptic.

Composer-pianist Robert Cunningham's many works for piano, various chamber ensembles, voice, chorus, and piano and orchestra reflect a highly original, complex, and chromatic Romantic style. He studied piano with Loren Withers at Duke University (graduating in 1970) and with Katherine Bacon at Juilliard.  Later turning to composing, he obtained a master's degree in composition from Georgia State University in 1995.  Based on a dissertation analyzing Rachmaninoff's harmonic practices, he received his Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University in 1999. He is the author of Sergei Rachmaninoff: A Bio-Bibliography, published by Greenwood Press.
