Barrio Lindo - Libres (Glenn Astro's Rhythm Tool)

Rhythm and Roots presents ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’, an compilation of music inspired by birdsong and a project fusing art with activism. We challenged some of South America's most talented young musicians to create an original piece of music inspired by and using the song of an endangered bird from their country.

The result is a beautifully diverse and rich album of fresh new music, fusing electronica with natural sound, folkloric rhythms with modern-synthesisers and precious singing with rich instrumentation. Each song tells a story and paints a picture of these magnificent birds.

Using music as a tool for change, 'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' aims to raise awareness about the plight of these beautiful but threatened species, many of which are on the edge of extinction. It will also raise funds for those working to protect them. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Ecuadorian birding organisations Aves y Conservación and Fundación Jocotoco, two non-governmental organisations with the aim of ensuring the survival of birds and their vital habitat in Ecuador, one of the most rich countries for biodiversity in the world.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl in March 2015 via Rhythm and Roots. It will be accompanied by a series of one-off illustrations and post-cards from the American designer Scott Partridge.

A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' is a non-profit, crowd-funded album of music inspired by birdsong. Featuring some of the continent's most talented young musicians and producers, each artist used the recorded song of an endangered species from their country and created an original track. 

The album aims to raise awareness about the plight of these birds and also to raise funds for those working to protect them. All proceeds will be donated to a pair of Ecuadorian NGO birding charities, which will include paying the salary of chief ranger of the Tapichalaca reserve, home to the Jocotoco Antpitta, Franco Mendoza.

This is our second stop in a trip through the whole continent, in where a-la Che Guevara, we will be unveiling some of the particular sounds of every country we visit as outsiders, and also how artists see their own culture:

This trip explains why Chile is perhaps the most vanguardist country in South America in terms of electronic Music, preserving a unique identity.  Indigenous and andean sounds.

Two practically unknown genres for outsiders are also present in Cielo Roto, : Jazz guachaca and Dub Guaracha, something that came from outside, and as soon as chilean musicians heard jazz or dub, they adapted it to their own style.  Hopefully new generations of producers keep dropping these two styles.


Matanza, Daniel Klauser, Cholita Sound, prove how proud Chilean are from their  Andean indigenous roots, while Lata and Dj Subversivo show how immersed in politics Chilean people still are.
