La música colombiana contiene diversos géneros que identifican cada región del territorio haciéndose muy frecuente el hallazgo de varios estilos musicales en cada una de las regiones. Esta rica diversidad musical se origina en la fusión de razas, pueblos y culturas que originó la actual sociedad y cultura colombiana.
La cumbia es uno de los géneros musicales más representativos de todas las categorías de música folclórica colombiana. Derivada del vocablo africano "Cumbé" que significa jolgorio o fiesta. La cumbia es un ritmo Colombiano por excelencia, cuyo origen es el resultado del largo proceso de fusión de tres elementos etnoculturales como son los indígenas, los blancos y los africanos, de los que adopta las gaitas, las maracas y los tambores. 
El vallenato, también de gran expansión e importancia, tiene su origen en la costa norte, donde la influencia de los ritmos de distintas etnias, desde los tiempos de la colonia mezclados posteriormente con los de finales del siglo XIX e inicios del XX, y matizados por el sonido de los acordeones que ingresaron por el mar Caribe, guitarras, las guacharacas y la caja, dieron forma a este género tan difundido en todo el país. En la región andina, centro interior del país, se desarrollaron géneros fundamentados en los instrumentos de cuerda, tales como el pasillo, bambuco, guabina y torbellino.
