For his Studio Barnhus debut, Laurence Guy connects the dots between the lo-fi ambient investigations of his 2017 debut album Saw You For The First Time, the warm club sounds heard on All I See Is Her, last year’s standout 12'' for Tokyo’s Mule Music, and the London-based dj and producer’s long roots in deep drum’n’bass and dubstep soil. Yadava makes a welcome return to his hometown imprint Ad Hoc Records with the release Velvet House On Sackville Street. His selections have garnered him widespread recognition and respect around the globe, and his original creations are certainly no different. In our interview with the man earlier this February, Yadava says the direction of this EP was heavily inspired by him "experimenting really with mixing live instrumentation and samples from records I was listening to a lot at the time, mainly bossa nova and some jazz-funk sounds."

One of the tracks from the record that is clearly influenced by these samba and jazz elements is titled "Camomile Samba." With a teasingly relaxed intro and hazy Bossa changes, this original unfolds into pure exotic simplicity. Alluring vocals mix with carnival drums and glittering piano licks to tempt you to your feet - before it all fades away as if it were just a dream. Here is a relaxed view of the party, seen at sunset and from a distance.

Music’s power is in creating community, and this is the essence of Laurence Guy’s work. The London-based DJ and producer’s motto is ‘music to make you feel feelings’: whether that’s comfort, nostalgia, bittersweetness or melancholy. His sound has an unmistakable warmth while being squarely aimed at the dancefloor: samples fit into sprawling keys, and dusty drums thud under lush chords. Amid a string of EPs, Guy has released two acclaimed albums; 2017’s blissful house LP Saw You For The First Time and 2023’s Living Like There’s No Tomorrow, But Killing Yourself In The Process, gracing labels including Studio Barnhus, Ninja Tune, Shall Not Fade and more, now signed to Future Classic. He’s now armed with a stash of hip hop and filter house influenced dance tracks, like the Jamie xx-tipped ‘Hey Baby’ and the groove-laden ‘Most Perfect People (Are Mostly Not Perfect)’ that are already soundtracking people’s best life moments.
