A Journey Through My Mind LC20

'a little glass figure, floating' (2019) was composed for the CHROMA ensemble, a Pierrot quintet with alto flute and bass clarinet doubling. The title is a quote from William Golding's novel 'Pincher Martin', in reference to the following extract:

'You could mutter, -sink now! And down it would go, down,
down: you could steady it and relent. You could let it
struggle towards the surface, give it almost a bit of air and
then send it steadily, slowly, remorselessly down and down'

The drowning of the glass figure described here serves as a striking metaphor for the feelings of powerlessness and suffocation that the work evokes throughout.
