Chicago MC (now Paris-based) RacecaR has been recording and touring quite a lot in France these years. With bands Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra, Dafuniks or Sax Machine, with producers Etienne de la Sayette, Grant Phabao or Lawkyz, with beatmakers Asagaya, Blanka, DJ Suspect & Doc TMK, ICBM Son Of A Pitch or Soul Square… for sure we're missing a few other cool cats in that list, but you get the point: every musician who meets RacecaR over here understands very quickly how cool the man is, how tight his flow goes, how masterfully his rhymes are delivered, and how in any kind of context he's able to fit in with style.

RacecaR started working with the French producer Grant Phabao approximatively one year ago, with a simple concept in mind: exploring some new rare grooves of reggae, ska, afrofunk, soul and jazz, on which he would try rhyming and rapping - uncharted waters in terms of tempo for a boom-bap aficionado!

Summer 2014 things shot off with an afro-funk-hip-hop monster, 'Return Of The Dig-Fu', followed in the fall by another smashing hip hop/funk hybrid, 'Rock Your Boat', and close to the end of the year, by a third single, 'We Do Anything', exploring a different blend with the lyricist's groovy rhymes recorded over one of Grant Phabao's heavy one drop reggae riddims, and featuring Parisian activist Taiwan MC on guest vocals.

The voyage in a sea of styles is far from over though, as RacecaR has now to face a psychedelic funk whirlwind with heavy stompin' & swingin' beats! Borrowing its chorus from Canadian MC & friend Jeff Spec, 'One Two One Two' sees our MC in great shape, delivering expertly crafted verses one after the other. It seems as if he could even confront a tropical storm now… but that's a story to be told on Paris DJs later on.

Andy Cooper gas been a member of Underground Hip-Hop mainstay Ugly Duckling since 1993, performing in more than thirty countries while co-producing and arranging critically acclaimed albums like ‘Journey To Anywhere’ and hit songs ‘A Little Samba’ and ‘Turn It Up’.

1. ‘BRING IT TO ME’

Secretly, I’ve always wanted to record a horribly viscous battle-rap in the tradition of Rakim’s ‘Lyrics of Fury’, Kool G. Rap’s ‘Poison’ or Big Daddy Kane’s ‘Set it off’. Being a member of a fairly happy band like Ugly Duckling, my opportunities to scorch the mic with vocal acid were few and far between so, for years, I’d been stockpiling violent metaphors and grizzly similes which I unleashed on ‘Bring it to Me’. To give this track the appropriate intensity, I hooked up a healthy dose of James Brown and dug through my vinyl stash to procure all kinds of explosive hits, breaks, fills and scratches to back my assault. By the time this tune fades out, I’ve commanded armies, dropped incendiary bombs and assassinated world leaders before pulling the plug on my competition!

2. ‘DO THE CHARLIE BROWN’

A while back, Young Einstein and I produced a track that we never used for U.D. so, with Rodney’s permission, I got out my tools and reworked the old instrumental until it became an upbeat homage to my favorite ‘Blockhead’. For whatever reason, I’ve always loved the way ‘Peanuts’ cartoonists animated the kids dancing at various holiday events so, on ‘Do the Charlie Brown’, I was inspired to give them a new groove for their next TV special; I can’t wait to hear Schroeder’s take on this number! My wife Tina helped with the chorus which was nice because, being that the EP is free, I couldn’t really afford to hire background vocalists. Big shout out to my man Vince Guaraldi!

Open Mike Eagle might not have all the answers, but few artists in hip-hop, music, or American life are asking smarter questions. In a landscape governed by ceaseless babble, flashing lights, and hollow lies, Eagle harmonizes into the void so we don’t have to. 

On this descent into the digital trenches, Eagle teams up with British producer, Paul White for Hella Personal Film Festival. Released on Mello Music Group, the full collaboration finds White behind the SP-1200s, conjuring a psychedelic strain of soul-funk, booming drums, and 21st century crate-digging in tropical attics of the imagination. On the microphone, the Chicago-bred, LA-based, Eagle artfully breaks down the banalities and perils of the modern condition. 

Recorded in London, Eagle’s new album continues where his 2014 masterpiece, Dark Comedy left off.  It’s anxiety-riddled but whimsical, addicted to and scornful of social media, stuffed with old wrestling in-jokes and film snippets. Self-aware admissions blend into attacks on societal double standards. 

Known for alchemical solo work and collaborations with Danny Brown, Homeboy Sandman, and Mos Def, this is White’s first proper union with Eagle. The two artists bonded over the notion of diversity.  The process started out with rough demos, which White ended up finishing in post-production—playing guitar, drums, bass, keyboards, percussion and pieces of wood found in a forest. Its genius ultimately comes from the pair mining a deep vein of emotional content—a discussion of the things we feel that you don’t say. A movie that hits so accurately it’s almost uncomfortable.  

These are tense anthems for the vulnerable, consecrations to black people with rich internal lives, agnostic prayers for those grappling with pain. They’re emotional landmines leavened by the wry bleakness usually only found in great stand-up comedians. Eagle exists in the lineage of They Might Be Giants and Richard Pryor, Freestyle Fellowship and his longtime friend and collaborator, Hannibal Burress. 

Within the first act, the plot becomes clear. See “Admitting the Endorphin,” where Eagle raps, “I chase my poison tail and get so high that voices fail.”  These are the movies he’d make it he knew how to make movies. Surreal vignettes about waking up with burrito hangovers in hotels you don’t recognize, wondering if you remembered to charge your phone. Aesop Rock and Hemlock Ernst (Sam Herring of Future Islands) pop up as fellow travelers. 

No one is better than Eagle at capturing the nauseous disorientation of day-to-day life. The deluge of sports highlights, unread texts and Twitter notifications. The compulsive need to check your phone at red lights and pauses in conversation. But his incisiveness extends far beyond observational humor. “Smiling (Quirky Race Doc)” examines the slights and casual bigotry of daily interaction. “A Short About a Guy That Dies Every Night” is a morbid rumination on death. 

These are the returns after long dark nights of the soul. When the noises are loud, the lights are off, and the armor is pierced. Short films that loop over and over again, as soon as you close your eyes.
