Dans la mystique Yoruba (reprise dans la Santerie Cubaine), 
Oggún est un Orisha majeur, maître du fer et de la forge. 
Il est l'un des Orishas les plus vieux du panthéon Yoruba.
Quand les orishas vinrent sur terre, c'est Oggún avec sa machette infatigable qui dut frayer un chemin parmi les arbustes et les mauvaises herbes aux autres dieux.
