Well it was a real pleasure to give this one another blast too Graham and I did so by watching the video again my good friend. Excellent stuff by you all and a fabulous song very well done my good friends...

good to hear this one again, there's an ever-present positive feel that builds towards the finale - as if the love itself never dies (?) - it's also interesting to hear that Marianne's vocal style becomes more "modern soul" as the track progresses...the passing of time perhaps, no war to end all wars.... putting the conjecture to one side - it works well as an emotive piece, solemn in places but somehow still celebratory

a really powerful piece of writing given full justice by this collaboration. The narrative of the dead soldier staying a boy in his lover's mind's eye is heart rending. Brilliant and extremely powerful. Loved it.

Thought I'd heard this one before as I recognise the pic but it appears I hadnt after all. Much enjoyed this, emotional feel throughout the song, alway sa sucker fro Mellotron and the twin vocals worked very well almost going into "Great gig in the sky" territory at the end there ! Splendid collab folks.

Well another year has passed by and Remembrance Day is upon us once again and it was a pleasure to give this another blast my good friends. I do hope your all well Graham and are enjoying life and your retirement from the cloud my friend.

For some reason I missed this originally Graham. Glad I caught it now. Your arrangements are great and the vocals by Mark and Marianne are perfect for the piece. I also watched Lee's video which rounded it all off perfectly. A piece to be proud of. :-)

Collaborations with Lavallin (& Lasaril)

This 'mini rock opera' as it seems to have become, started out as an instrumental, which I wrote for a good friend who had just suffered a tragic loss, that of his only son. My good friend Mark Bennett had listened to the instrumental and been very affected by the sentiment expressed and asked me if I would consider revisiting the track again, which I readily agreed to. His initial idea was to pen just a couple of lines of lyrics and approach fellow SoundClouder Marianne Holland, to possibly do some vocals. I'd collaborated with Marianne on several projects before and very much enjoyed working with her and I really love her vocal style and admire her incredible range, so she was a natural choice for this track.
From this initial idea from Mark and several e-mails of further ideas for this track from Mark, I had the idea to put together The Great War Centenary Suite ... now complete ... it seems very fitting that the same track that started it all should be the one to complete the project it gave birth to in the first place.

I am greatly indebted to both Mark, for his vision, his lyrics, vocals and his boundless enthusiasm and Marianne for her wonderful soaring vocals and backing vocals as ever, but also for her additional instrumentation and input and I am enormously grateful to my good friend Lee Lucas for kindly offering to put together a YouTube vid to accompany this track which is brilliant and at such short notice as well ... big thanks Lee mate!! ;-)

This Great War 1914~18 Centenary Suite was written with the intention of being one continuous piece of music, and with wonderful  contributions from my good friends and fellow SoundClouders MarkJBennett and Marianne Holland, I feel it should be presented as such.

The Great War 1914~18 Centenary Suite ~ (Lavallin) feat. Mark J.Bennett & Marianne Holland

An unforgettable classic from King Crimson at the end of a classic era.
The closing piece from their album 'Red' (1974) which is normally 12 minutes and 15 seconds long with an extended instrumental section, fusing jazz and rock in a complex arrangement. However, you may be pleased that we are offering the abridged version here. I hope we have made a respectful tribute to a landmark song in King Crimson's back catalogue. Thanks to Graham for believing that we could even try this one let alone hope to pull it off.

This is part of Graham Lavallin's album 'The Healing Hands Of Time' that I have been fortunate enough to be able to contribute to. Collaborating with my good friend Graham on subject matter I have little knowledge of was always going to be a challenge, however with his guidance and patience between us we have managed to make something that neither of us on our own could have achieved. A true collaboration, although most of the lyrical content is Graham's, I did add some rhymes. Procession (with Lavallin)

'Moving On' originally started out as a short instrumental piece written as a possible theme for a drama series, similar to that of the same title recently shown on TV ... later, I was planning to end the 'The Healing Hands Of Time' album in progress with this instrumental ... it has since been Mastered by my good friend Patric Farrell aka the FisherKing and will appear at the end of the album as a bonus track.
My good friend Mark J.Bennett @markjbennett , whose vocals are featured on that album, suggested adding some lyrics and vocals and making it an uplifting song to end the album. I extended the arrangement and Mark sent me a guide vocal and lyrics which seemed to me to give the song a Robert Wyatt feel and the lyrics put me in mind of my son's situation, being in hospital for coming up for a year now. I added more lyrics and sang the main vocal with him in mind, though the lyric is pretty universal really.
Mark has been the main driving force behind making this instrumental track into a fully fledged song and I am greatly indebted to him for all his input and inspiration as always ... he is a joy to work with ... I'm no singer and probably would not have attempted to do this song had he not persuasively steered me, in this direction. Sadly he is out of time on his account again and cannot post this latest collaboration on his page, but I have no doubt he will be replying to any comments directed his way and as always I thank you for listening and all comments are greatly appreciated :))

Another song to add to our collection of 'Songs from the Sea'. As before, Dan offered a slow celtic air, which had such a beautiful melody that it felt like a 'boat song'. I was inspired to write a lyric about the herring fishing industry that was once so important to so many nations. Dick and Dan added some more lyrics, then the tempo had to quicken to convey the joy of the fishermen returning home and once it had all three of us singing, it began to really take shape. The Silver Darlings (with Dan Lockhart & Dick Vestdijk)

This song has taken almost a thousand years to get on to the cloud.
Originally it was written, recorded and posted on SC as a rock song, around 2 years ago. Subsequently I thought that it might work as a ballad, and so, set out on a lengthy journey that took many twists and turns, with contributions from Phil Gladman, Lee Lucas and Chris O, but it just didn’t sit right with me somehow. There came a point I lost heart and, to be honest, beginning to grossly dislike the song. After months of traumatic toil it finally died of neglect…….
Out of the blue, about a year or so later, Chris emailed me “remember that song “A Thousand Years”, I’ve recorded a new vocal, what do you think?” Well, I thought it was stunning! And it rekindled my interest. Then, Lee added the Hammond in the chorus and under the solo. Absolutely wonderful it just lifts the whole thing.
Normally, I’d say what a pleasure it was…….and working with such great talents, and thoroughly nice people to boot, as Chris, Lee and Phil has been a real pleasure, even if the song has been a nightmare. There are some wonderful performances here, from Chris’s beautiful heartfelt vocal, to Phil’s subtle but driving bass, to Lee’s fabulous keyboard playing and outstanding production, and artwork! This recording owes so much to these performances, without which it wouldn’t have risen from the ashes. So, I owe a great big thanks to Chris, Lee and Phil for everything……..

Our latest offering is based around the 18th Century story of "The Stainmore Hand", well-known in Northern English folklore.

The song's events are centred on the remote Spittal Inn, its landlord, George, the maid, Bella, and a mysterious traveller seeking shelter from the ravages of an early Winter storm.

Stalker (1993)

This is the 9th track in our Thin Lizzy tribute project, this time we’ve chosen the mean & moody “The Sun Goes Down” from Thin Lizzy’s Thunder & Lightening album. This song was requested by Graeme (Vortexia) a while ago, so it seemed highly appropriate to invite him to play bass on it. I’m delighted that Graeme agreed, and an absolutely sterling job he has made of it, he has captured the feel and the bass sound so well that you’d swear that Phil Lynott was playing it, a top, top job!

A big mention once again to Lee Lucas for his great work here, a totally brilliant vocal, a superb production, and a piece of artwork that suits the piece so well. Lee has worked with me on many of my original pieces, as well as these songs for our Lizzy tribute. As well as his undoubted prowess as a musician and producer, Lee is always generous with his time, advice and encouragement, and over the years he has become a great friend. It is always a pleasure and an honour to work with him.

This song was different from most of our other collaborations in the way it developed. It started from a lyric for almost all of the song from myself, which Dick added to, especially in the chorus as well as coming up with the music and vocal melody. Dan came on board later with backing vocals and more instrumentation as well as the final mix.

Witnessing the wreck from her window,
Showed her mettle when facing peril.
With her father, she braved the storm

Rowed a mile in a Northumbrian coble,
Was an act so selfless and noble.
They rescued four men and Sarah Dawson,
Too late for the vicar and her children.
Newspapers clamour for her story,
And bathe in her reflected glory.

Eighteen were saved from the sixty-two, 
Gifts and donations they did accrue,
From circus, Duke and even the Queen.
Such fuss, they could not have foreseen.
Artists clamour for her likeness,
Yet something faded from her brightness.

Unwanted celebrity was hard to maintain,
The pressures of fame, proved a strain.
Already reclusive on her island retreat,
Her admirers became indiscreet.
Visitors clamour for a token,

The Story of “Arachnid Spackle” (narrative prose) by Len Rice
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The spider stirs as hazy beams of warm sunlight stream through weathered panes making glitter of the dusty air.

Descending from the safety of the lofty web to explore the vast universe of the decaying Victorian home-

It ventures cautiously into the unknown with speed & stealthy stillness endeavoring to evade detection by enemy & prey.

Soon faced with a perilously wide expanse of bare wooden floor speed is its only option.

Nearing the safety of the opposite wall a fiendish cackle announces discovery by the most feared foe:  the old woman.

A frantic frenzy of sadistic stomping & striking with all at hand befalls the spider as it deftly dodges each blow on its way to the wall.

Halfway up with speed failing to elude the assailant it resorts to stillness as a rolled newspaper finds its target.

With a stifled scream the spider becomes a permanent part of the crumbling plaster wall.

Roused by their mother’s death cry her offspring begin to emerge from scores of spherical silken eggs to seek & avenge her fate.

Nourished by rage they grow overnight to gargantuan proportions instinctively forming bushido battalions at first light.

The sound of marching shifts her slumber from dream to drowsiness until daylight’s horrific horde makes wide her eyes.

In slippers, robe, & disbelief her retreat from revenge is soon blocked by back to wall.

Their steady advance becomes a focused fury of web spinning entombment.

With a suffocated scream the old woman becomes a permanent part of the crumbling plaster wall.

Hi all,
I just play by ear ... guitar and synths, occasionally attempting a vocal ... making recordings just for the sheer enjoyment that making music gives you.
All the tracks here were recorded & mixed using GarageBand, but I'm slowly exploring Logic Pro X ... so hope to improve the quality of recordings over time ;-)

My main guitar is a 90's Fender USA Strat with Dave Gilmour pick-up set ... a Vintage Peter Green/Gary Moore 'Lemon Drop' Les Paul for those rich bluesy tones hopefully ... acoustic guitars are an Ovation Applause and a Lindo, both with an onboard tuner for open tunings.
Guitar amps are a Fender Cyber Deluxe and a little Vox Brian May 'Deacy Amp'.
Guitar pedals are Boss ME70 and a Yamaha Magic Stomp loaded up with Charlie Hall's 'Echoes Of The Past' Delays.
Onboard guitars/pedals in GarageBand and Logic accessed via an Apogee Gio pedalboard interface.
Synths used just lately are Roland Jupiter 50; Korg Kronos X; Korg Karma loaded up with Vintage Instruments and Karma Soundsets.
Korg X5D and EMU vintage Pro modules hooked up to the Jupiter and Kronos via midi and into Soundcraft analog mixer and into iMac via Roland Sonic Cell interface.
VSTs/Software: Arturia V2 complete and Arturia Analog Experience The Laboratory with Keyboard (main software controller); EWQL Complete Composers collection ... I'm a complete technophobe so it takes more of my time trying to learn the software than ever it does making music ... frustrating but at my age it ain't going to get any easier:) 
My musical preferences and influences cover a whole range of genres ... so hope you'll find something to enjoy. I always appreciate any comments or feedback, if you have the time ... it's all good fun ;-)

I've been making music for around 16 years now but because of the wonderfully generous community that is SC, I have learned so much in a short time. I look forward to learning even more by collaborating. 
I suppose my strengths are in lyric-writing and singing. I feel fortunate to have been able to work with some stunning compositions by some very talented SCers.
