Alice Grace is a British jazz singer whose career began touring with established UK jazz big band The National Youth Jazz Orchestra and guest singing with the James Pearson Trio at the famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, before landing a place to continue her musical education at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. 

Alice sang with a variety of jazz and soul ensembles performing at prestigious venues such as The Southbank Centre, The Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as more intimate jazz venues across the UK and Europe, sharing the stage with some of her biggest jazz influences; Norma Winstone, Jacqui Dankworth, Cleveland Watkiss and Pete Churchill.  

Since graduating with BMus Hons in 2010, Alice’s performing has taken her to many countries, including a two year stint in the Middle East where she co-founded Time Out award-winning band The Swing Revue; performing a packed schedule of high profile events and helping build a hugely successful residency at Jazz Pizza Express. 

On returning to the UK, Alice joined her husband in the north-east of England. Here she continues her work in all aspects of music: performing, recording and teaching. 

As the lead female singer with the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band, Alice performs regularly around the north of the UK, sharing the stage with jazz A-listers including Joe Stilgoe, Polly Gibbons, Bruce Adams, Alan Barnes, Paul Booth, Hailey Tuck, Anthony Strong and Mark Nightingale. 2018 saw the recording of duo album ‘A Timeless Place’ by Alice and guitarist Pawel Jedrzejewski, following their performance for the Jazz North East ‘Women Make Music’ series, as well as performances in Italy and Ibiza with jazz comrades The Playhouse Band. Introduction to Misapprehension:

Having drawn together numerous talented people over nearly 3 decades, Misapprehension has been created to represent achievements in varying fields, including music, film making, video game production and writing. We are therefore setting up as a record label, film and games studio.

Our first example of this is the launching of the debut album by Daryl Quincy. Daryl began production on this in 2004 using songs written since 1992. He took time out, moving house and jobs and so on and added enough songs to create an album from 2008. Now 12 years further on, after several health difficulties and practical obstacles (housing, hard drive crashes, day jobs, university work etc) the album is launching in 2020. Daryl is our example of never giving up, of fulfilling a dream - however unlikely or unprofitable - to create, to deliver, to experiment living with some regrets and not allowing other regrets, finding out what happens if you reach for the stars keeping your feet on the ground. Ignoring calls of "Don't bother", "Its too much work", "It'll never pay" in order to see projects through that may be a gamble, but in several ways are better done than not done.

Daryl Quincy's debut album, for example, brings together several musicians who's paths coincidentally crossed in the 1980s and he combines them in performance across decades into one song, "Out Of My Head". He fuses Indian, folk, jazz, country, blues, classical and funk music into an album of short catchy 'pop' songs. These have been a long time in production, yet are not 'overproduced' - maintaining some rough edges and real/natural artifacts from basement and attic recordings, with some piano and sax parts even recorded on cassette in the 1990s. His hope is that he has created a natural, 'organic' and genuine anthology, a 'human' album with textures, atmosphere, vulnerability and strength. 

Such a debut album perhaps fittingly encapsulates the ethos of Misapprehension - warmth, humanity, vulnerability, hope and resolve. We hope we deliver this in the creative projects to come. Thank you.
