The Story  ᓚᘏᗢ  ➜
Sunshadow Basin lay where the last light of day went to die.

It was not a lake of water, but a vast hollow scooped out of the world, ringed by black-glass cliffs and forests of pale, towering mushrooms. At the center, where other basins might hold rain or snowmelt, this one held shadow—a slow, roiling pool of dusk that mirrored no sky and reflected no stars.

Above it drifted a sun that was not a sun, a disk of dim amber hanging low and motionless, as if someone had pinned the end of the day in place and forgotten to move it along.

The people of that world did not come here. The creatures that lived elsewhere skirted the horizon and turned away. Only the myth-born and the alien-hearted felt the pull of the Basin.

Tonight, one of them answered.

I. Nyri of the Twilight Vein

Nyri was not human, though from a distance she might have passed as something like one.

Her form was tall and willowy, a silhouette woven from dusk. Her skin was a semi-transparent charcoal, within which faint constellations blinked and faded as if her bones were made of starlight. Her hair fell in a cascade of shadow-veins that occasionally sparked with stray flares of violet and gold, like secret suns trying to be born and then thinking better of it.

Her eyes were the strangest of all: each iris a spiraling mandala, rings of color rotating slowly, never quite repeating their pattern. Look long enough, and you would see shapes moving inside them—cities dissolving, forests blooming, fractal geometry folding in on itself.

Nyri was of the Twilight Vein, an elder race who walked in the borderlands between bright and dark, between waking and dream. They were not many, and most had retreated to distant nebular palaces, leaving the world to carve its own fate.

But Sunshadow Basin had called.

She stood now at its rim, boots planted in the soft loam, the air around her saturated with the scent of wet stone and fungal growth. The mushrooms nearest her were as tall as houses, their caps a ghostly white tinged with faint bioluminescent blues and greens. Their gills glowed from within like lanterns, casting intricate lacework shadows onto the ground.

From the Basin’s center the pool of condensed twilight heaved and sighed, as though it were some enormous, gently sleeping creature.

Nyri spread her four-fingered hands, palm-out, feeling the currents. The Basin was wounded. The twilight was thicker than it should have been, clotted, reluctant to move. The amber sun above it was too dim, and its halo flickered in unhealthy ways, like a candle about to cough its last flame.
