I know this sounds really pretentious and sorta stupid, but, if it doesn't flow for you, at least enjoy the varied selection of tracks from a variety of sources.

I prefer a boss fight music to have a bit more emotion in them. My general thinking is that the music should describe the feelings a typical player goes through when encountering a boss. First there's terror and confusion while you are overwhelmed by the enemy. Then you feel determination while you figure out the enemy pattern and outsmart it. Finally, you feel heroic and triumphant as you emerge victorious.

Like the owl piece, I treated the repeating rhythm from the original track as an intro to the hidden "main" piece that the Game Boy was not powerful enough to handle. I challenged myself to keep the rhythm untouched for most of the track while composing a song around it. I chose to use bits of the main Zelda theme, because that describes Link himself while he infiltrates these dungeons and disrupts the monsters that never faced any opposition before.

Update 3/20/2015 - Re EQ'ed

I really disliked the original version when it appears in the game, and I know many share my sentiment. There's always an unskippable dialogue that appears, the sound effect when you pick up the acorn or piece of power is so high pitched, and the musical cue itself is so frantic and repetitive. It's a very jarring transition from the calmer overworld theme or pretty much any other piece of music in the game. Because of this, I feel less guilty in changing the music however I see fit.

Whether you pick up the guardian acorn or the piece of power, I am guessing Link would feel some kind of powerful sensation flow through his veins as he absorbs such incredible energy. What does it physically feel like when you are suddenly able to deal twice the amount of energy or take only half the amount of damage? In addition, Link must feel really excited and impatient to try out his temporary power. That was the feeling I was trying to capture.

For those that are unaware, Richard is a character from the Japan-only game, "For the Frog the Bell Tolls," and makes a cameo in Link's Awakening. I only just found that out right before I started arranging. The overworld theme from that game contains a fully developed version of the theme, so I based my arrangement off of that instead, while still preserving the slower peaceful nature of the version found in Link's Awakening.

Update 3/20/2015 - Reworked the finale portion. Adjusted the trumpet levels, added some counter-phrasing in the horns.

I felt Kanalet Castle deserved a more romantic and grand theme than just four repeating arpeggios. You have this king Richard who was ousted from his castle and forced to hid in his villa. Did the moblins just show up and push him out? No, it was much worse! All his soldiers fell in battle, his family and friends were massacred, and the grand history of his kingdom was destroyed. I imagined Link roaming through the hallways while glancing at the paintings and statues, imagining what was once a proud legacy. I haven't given the brass section much love in recent tracks, so I tried to use them here in grand fashion. I pulled phrases from various tracks from the soundtrack of "For the Frog the Bell Tolls" and used them in constructing the noble melody. The theme swells in a crescendo until the very end, where it hangs unresolved. Link's eyes snap back into reality as he realizes the past glory is over.

Of course, this is just a dream island, so probably none of that happened.

Update 3/20/15 - Re EQ'ed

I have been thinking of this moment in the game since I first started arranging. Thanks to this year's Thanksgiving sale (Happy Thanksgiving!) I was able to get some new expressive string samples and immediately put them to use here. This track and the next one are actually composed of three different cues.

I - Ambience
Generally, cavern and great hall music seems to sound really eerie when it consists of nothing more than deep lows and soft highs, which the original version already does fairly well. For some weird reason, I could have sworn I remember hearing a wailing female vocal in the original version, even though that couldn't have been possible. That is a testament to how effective the 8-bit Game Boy game was in setting the atmosphere.
