This song is part of a new oratorio based on the encyclical Laudato Si' issued by Pope Francis. Laudato Si’ addresses not only people of faith, but everyone on earth. The message focuses on “our common home” – how humans have ravaged the Earth, and why we need to work together across all divisions, to mend and care for all inhabitants on the planet. Francis writes:

“Our goal is not to amass information or to satisfy curiosity, but rather to become painfully aware to dare to turn what is happening to the world into our own personal suffering and thus to discover what each of us can do about it.” 

At this critical time, artists have great potential to communicate, nurture compassion, and inspire. This new oratorio interprets the text as a call to action through the medium of music. Reverend Dr. Harvey Cox is advising the use of text in collaboration with composer Linda J. Chase. The 18- movement genre-crossing music for chorus, soloists and chamber ensemble will be approximately 70 minutes long.

Prayer for Our Common Home

Linda J. Chase is a composer, ecophilosopher, and flutist. Her music weaves elements of chamber music, jazz and contemporary improvisation with spoken word and interdisciplinary arts. She has received composition awards from places including the Japan Foundation, Grand Canyon National Park, Kaji Aso Studio, the Morris Graves Institute, Berklee College of Music, Studio Red Top and ASCAP. She is an active member of Landscape Music Composers Network.Linda J. Chase was born in La Jolla, California and currently resides in the Boston area. She received her Ph.D. from Prescott College in 2017. Her dissertation, "Contemplative Ecoaesthetics Through Musical Arts: Reflection, Resonance, and Resilience" was published by ProQuest in December of 2017.
