"In this podcast series, I'm exploring the Binaural Nodar Digital Archive: gathering and sharing recordings from its vast collection, remixing and re-contextualizing as an art form, with consideration and empathy to their original context…an outsider invited in to explore, witness, and process. Then share.

I am exploring how the concepts and methodologies of how my virtual research and practice tool, the Wayback Sound Machine, can be used to explore a virtual place, the digital archive of Binaural/Nodar. The Wayback Sound Machine asks: what can we gather from sounding the past? It proposes that the relationship between our soundscape and creative sound design can give us key information about how we listen, what we listen for, and what that can tell us. It researches various forms of sound from the past, and designing sound for the past, to consider what knowledge and applications can be gained from the concept, and so, it is very much at home in archives, but it does not explore the archives in a linear or historic manner. It explores the archives as a living and fluid place, a complex and ever forming, ever changing place where the present can be welcomed to explore and effect, their changes becoming a part of its constant and sensible evolution. As Salomé Voegelin states so beautifully, “A sonic sensibility makes thinkable complex connections and trajectories in time and space.” (Voegelin, 2010, p. xvi):

“Can an archive be a Place? Somewhere between the virtual and the actual, a place we can visit, interpret, shape with our perception and art. Somewhere we can find connection, and be connected, be changed by an experience, and leave something in return.”"

Maile Colbert is an intermedia artist, researcher, and educator with a focus on time-based media. She is a PhD Research Fellow in Artistic Studies with a concentration on Sound Studies, cinematic sound design, and its relationship with soundscape ecology at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a visiting lecturer at the Universidade da Maia, Porto. Her current practice and research project is titled, Wayback Sound Machine: Sound through time, space, and place, and asks what we might gather from sounding the past. She is a collaborator with the art organization Binaural Nodar, a member of CineLab, research lab for cinema and philosophy and is an editor and author at Sonic Field. She has exhibited, screened, and performed globally.

"A child waves to an old lady while a cool breeze fills the room carrying transatlantic voices - the same and always new songs. I remember. I remember you."

Wanderers number 39 is created by Dibuk, a Brazilian musician, singer and songwriter, who makes the most beautifully experimental and at times intricate music, with a sound that marries folk, ambient and musique concrète.

I first came across the name Dibuk when I was in a book/recordstore in Porto. A very friendly shopkeeper pointed me towards a poster of a concert by Dibuk, praising her music to be especially interesting and refreshing. The concert was that evening, and unfortunately I could not attend, but the name stuck - so I listened to the album 'Casa Zero' on the way back home, and immediately became an admirer. What stood out for me is the effortless blending of instruments and samples and the uniquely melancholic but refreshing feel the album kept throughout.

The episode is called 'vamos chamar o vento', which means: 'let's call the wind'.

Wanderers is a bi-monthly mix series hosted by stopendor. It focusses on the transportive aspect of sound, inviting artists that also have a strong affinity with this aspect to wander the rich plains of sound, in whatever direction they want to go. The goal is to create a diverse, imaginative and adventurous collection of journeys and stories, in which one could get lost and discover endless new things. It also functions as a platform for artists to create and discover in the process of making an episode.

Rubisco is the second full length album from Donato Epiro. Following his debut album Fiume Nero (2014), the young Italian composer has moved from the raw primordial chaos that characterised his first work to develop a reflection on how a hypothetical absence of humans and biological life could modify industrialized and civilized spaces.

Using field recordings, obscure samples and FM synthesis, Epiro draws his abstract landscapes as a series of overexposed and imprecise pictures made by concrete and organic architectures, amorphous rhythmic patterns, repetitive sequences broken by oblique elements that seems looking for a new active role into the ecosystem.

Exploring communication and transitions between the inanimate side of the existing and the living one, the sound of Rubisco seems to be pulled out from the walls of an abandoned building or captured while it is lying on the ground of empty spaces or fluctuating like fine dust through the light. It leads the listener into a form of "after rave" limbo, or a personal hiding place, where the head projects only the image of the sounds you've listened to during your human experience.

The result is a record that plays with taut minimal touches, inspired by the work of Egisto Macchi and Angus MacLise, alongside the sort of sonic delirium recently dreamed up by the likes of Demdike Stare and Fis.

 Music is one of multiple ways of living fully, being whole and complete, immersed on the vastness of the world. At each music note we can redeem something more from our essence, spread it, echo it, give, receive and be. Svayam is a moment of meditation guided by sound, and it’s offered as an opportunity to be who we really are, to take from the inside what escapes our instant and automatic sensibility. João Sousa guides this voyage - personal, but collective - with a guitar, voice and bowls.
Each body touched by sound is a moment of unique love,
an inexhaustible source of energy. To create with sound is to open doors to the earth, to touch the water, feel the air and transform with fire… For a moment we understand the act of creation, we are that moment, undulating in the ethereal, taking off from matter.
