Akuphone presents a collection of recordings of various musical practices from the Laotian provinces of Champasak, Attapeu, Sekong and Saravan. These documents are a perfect introduction to the traditional music of South Laos minority groups. Popular modern music is widely spread but visitors are barely ever exposed to ancient acoustic practices from villages. The most famous and typical one is the molam Lao, an art of singing accompanied with the khene, a mouth organ which is the symbol of Laos. This collection compels one to discover the brao gongs, the triang bamboo flutes, the Lao, Ta Oy, Alak, OI, Pacoh or Nyaheun mouth organs as well as the powerful singing accompanying these instruments. 

Caught on the spot, these outstanding testimonies were collected between 2006 and 2013 by Laurent Jeanneau, aka King Gong. Through his researches, this self-taught ethnologist has gradually become one of the specialists of the field, building up a collection of complete and fascinating sound archives which contribute documenting parts of this immaterial heritage. MUSIC OF SOUTHERN LAOS brings some light on a region of South East Asia still largely unknown from the general audience as well as the recently reborn ethnographic musical industry.

This compilation will delight both molam lovers and beginners unused to South East Asian sounds. Enclosed: liner notes in English, French and Japanese as well as a downloading code.

Inside & Around Crammed - Episode 11: Don The Tiger

To celebrate the upcoming release of his album “Matanzas” on Crammed Discs in October, Berlin-based Catalan experimentalist Don The Tiger (aka Adrián de Alfonso) has prepared an incredible mix containing no less than 117 excerpts of diverse music that inspired him. Adrián has collaborated with the likes of Lydia Lunch, Go-Betweens founder Robert Forster, Carla Bozulich and Lucrecia Dalt (who coproduced his new album). Since moving to Berlin, Don The Tiger takes inspiration from everything he misses in that city -be it rumba, MPB, baroque fantasy, guabina, flamenco or Fania Records- and mixes it with musique concrète and elaborate sampling techniques, delivering it all in a way that owes more to primitive rock'n'roll than to anything else. 

Here’s a little note from him about this very special program: “This mix is a little homage to some of the music and the fantastic bands that have influenced me during the making of "Matanzas". Like that record this is an obsessive collage, where recent loves meet old companions, eroded mp3 exports whisper in the ear of sturdy flacs, and stereo joyfully converts to mono. 117 mercilessly chopped and screwed tracks which are as paradoxical, whimsical, comical, joyous, relentless, pathetical, and romantic as I can only dream my music was. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did while weaving it!"

Place Language is an international non-profit compilation album project inspired by the themes found in Robert Macfarlane’s widely-acclaimed book ‘Landmarks’. In particular it focuses on the book’s extensive topographic glossaries, the “word-hoard” of depictive landscape terms gathered from 30 different languages, dialects and sub-dialects around Britain & Ireland and divided into sections by type of terrain (Flatlands, Uplands, Waterlands, Coastlands, Underlands, Northlands, Edgelands, Earthlands and Woodlands). Relying on these topograms, or “tiny place poems”, as creative prompts, Place Language seeks to both inspire a renewed interest in our surroundings and reinvigorate our appreciation for the audible textures & patterns that characterize a place in keeping with the book’s stated desire to “re-wild” our vocabulary.

The collection features the work of 28 different sound-artists, field recordists, and musicians from around the globe each of whom selected a Landmarks topogram and recorded an impression of it thus adding rich new aspects of dimensionality through the act of sonification. These selections cover all nine of the book’s glossaries along with place-words of new coinage as prompted by the blank one which Macfarlane leaves at the end of the book for readers to fill in from their own experience. The end result is a truly global and collaborative survey of place, language, and sound.

Continuing on with our isolation appropriation, we’ve got another amazing audible escape from the madness. This time it’s more of an internal look into way things are and/or the way things were. 
This time coming from Los Angeles via Alanñé, a multi-sensory extraordinaire that delivered us an absolute melter of a mix. Simply dubbing this a ‘mix’ does not do it justice, its more of an exploration through every soundscape known in existence, an audible tapestry, consisting of sound bites, field recordings, ambient dreamscapes, noise, drone, thoughts, and processes. I’d consider this something you would hang in a gallery for people to enjoy it in their own way and in their own time. Without further ado, I invite you to do just that.

In this mix, we concentrated on tonal distancing by blending a 4 hour cut of sounds are that are growing, environmental, mystical, natural, synthetic and clean. This is not music concerned with entertaining our conscious selves. Instead, it’s designed to brush up against our unconscious - those same places where we process memory, fantasies, and dreams.  
Featuring moments from artists such as Dettinger, DJ Olive and John Philip Sousa along with dear friends Worldcom, Forest Management, Spirituals and Magnetic Dispatch, to name a few. 5 unreleased tracks from Alanñé are sprinkled in. 
We dedicate this mix to the famous amusement artist Cecil Yarbrough, who we thought about a lot as we made it.

Output from a software patch i'm working on to make music out of user input. The input in this case is any number. All the patterns are generated from this number, there is no randomness used in the software, so if you enter the number twice you get the same output. These examples also use one source sample which i was changing throughout. Still lot's I want to do with this, the melodic parts could do with a lot of work for example...
