~ assorted melancholia and euphoria for recovery ~

I first gathered these tracks together back in December, after a few months of struggling with what felt like a long covid relapse but might just have been burnout. They gave me a lot of sustenance over that period - moments of peace, beauty and ecstasy. And I wanted to share them :)

I tried to string them together in a mix a couple of times around the new year, but couldn't get it to stick. Then yesterday the sun was out, I was feeling relaxed, the pirate studio was calling and I thought I'd give it another shot. The result is far from perfect, I drop a couple of transitions and there are things I would do differently next time... But it captures what I wanted it to capture, I think: those months of having to move slowly, a winter of recovering and rebuilding, and then how I was feeling yesterday on an unusually warm spring Sunday, back on my feet. I hope you like it!

healing tapestry

I’ve had a ‘120-130 gristle’ playlist brewing for a while - bass-heavy, tightly knotted tracks that are a bit slower and more ungh than I’d usually play. Started sorting through it one day, hopped to pirate in Hackney Wick for a change to record this the next.

The flow of it is unusual, I think. Starts pretty high energy polyrhythmic party, then pulls back to be darker and more sparse before collapsing into barely-contained chaos around halfway. I clamber out of the abyss over the course of the second half, hitting a hype phase around 1h-1h15 (actually get to play some of my fave dancefloor tunes that don’t usually get an airing!), then play the rest out a bit more melodic. And it never goes above 140bpm, shock!

Honestly the arc maps my mental journey over the preceding couple of weeks surprisingly accurately. I’m quite enjoying mixing like this atm - seeing it as a way of capturing and working through emotions, as much as something that could be appropriate on a dancefloor (if I had to play a set like this anywhere tho it would be Corsica room 2, fyi). Really felt like I exorcised some demons over the course of the 90 mins - hope it does the same for you!

CLUB NRG: jersey house x dnb x trance set for New Peaks Will Rise 2024

In the last few months of 2024, I lost two of the beings I loved most in the world: my dog, and my 
Granny. I drifted away from music (and friends!) for much of that period, but these tracks still made it through to me. 

Some were just present in the background. Others I listened to intensely, obsessively, each for a handful of days. It felt important to try and stitch them all together, for some closure or catharsis or maybe just as a record of that period for my future self. I’m still unsure how successful that stitching has been (I ran out of time to ‘perfect’ it before going travelling!). But I think the mix captures both the emotional turmoil and clarity of those months. I hope you enjoy the ride :)

VasCast invites VERTEX - 01/08/25 - Voices Radio

Seven and a half exhilarating hours from one of modern club's sharpest.

Tim Reaper's mammoth entry for RA.1000 is all about range. You thought the Future Retro London boss was just a jungle and hardcore head? Think again.

The mix's infinite-scroll tracklist (the longest we've ever published in full!) includes a who's who of top-rate producers, from A Guy Called Gerald and Cari Lekebusch to Batu, Mia Koden and the one and only Shackleton.

Opening with weighty grime and ending on head-spinning drum & bass, the mix journeys through US club, wobbly dubstep, classic techno and, of course, many shades of jungle. Rather than go the easy route, the Londoner approached the assignment with the curiosity, integrity and vulnerability of fellow shapeshifters like dBridge, Calibre and ASC.

"The idea was to represent other styles of electronic music that I've been a bit self-conscious about openly expressing my interest in," he told RA.

RA.1000 isn't just another side of Tim Reaper's artistry: thankfully for us, it feels like only the beginning.
