Khutbah—25.04.25—Abū Fuḍayl

- The importance of having correct, sound intention and being sincere to Allāh. 
- Fuḍayl b. ‘Iyāḍ (رحمه الله) on what constitutes shirk, riyā and ikhlāṣ. 
- The one truly upon sincerity in worship. 
- “Say (O Muḥammad ﷺ): ‘Verily, my Ṣalāh (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allāh, the Lord of the ‘Ālamīn (mankind, jinns and all that exists). He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.’” [Sūrah al-An’ām 6:169]

- “Say, (O Muḥammad ﷺ), ‘Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.” [Sūrah az-Zumar 39:11]

- Ibn al-Jawzī (رحمه الله) on mankind’s inclination for wanting their deeds to be apparent/known.

Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:

- “Indeed Allāh conferred a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger (Muḥammad ﷺ) from among themselves, reciting unto them His Verses, and purifying them, and instructing them (in) the Book and al-Ḥikmah [the wisdom and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ], while before that they had been in manifest error.” [Sūrah Āl ‘Imrān 3:164]

- “Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger (Muḥammad ﷺ) from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He is anxious over you, for the believers full of pity, kind, and merciful.” [Sūrah at-Tawbah 9:128]

- The greatest thing the Messenger ﷺ had concern for.

- Examples of measures the Messenger ﷺ took to prevent even coming close to shirk. 

- His ﷺ warning against excessively praising him.

- Warning against making our homes like graveyards and making the grave of the Messenger ﷺ a place of worship and celebration. 

- The prohibition of adorning the graves and constructing shrines. 

- The Messenger’s ﷺ concern for his ummah up until the last moments of his life.

- The prohibition of praying when the sun is rising or setting, and the reason for its prohibition.

- The prohibition of sacrificing where the mushrikīn also sacrifice. 

- The prohibition of language that indicates something is equal to Allāh. 

- Imām as-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) on the command, “And do not come near to zinā” [Sūrah al-Isrā 17:32]

- How to attain purification and salvation.

Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:

The Qur’an and the Sunnah are built upon advice.

The farewell advice of the Prophet ﷺ to the Companions.

“I have left you upon that which is clear; its night is like its day…”

“Those who live long after me will see many differences, so hold onto my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.”

Hold onto it with your molar teeth.

Hear and obey the rulers.

Advice of Abu Bakr as-Siddīq: “I have not abandoned anything from the actions of the Prophet ﷺ except that I acted upon it. Verily, I fear that if I leave any of his actions, I would deviate.”

Advice of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb: “Take yourselves to account before you are called to account. Weigh your deeds and statements before they are weighed. Adorn yourselves with good deeds before the Great Day.”

Advice of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān: “O son of Ādam, the Angel of Death who has been appointed to take your soul has passed by you, focusing on others. It may be that he will now bypass them and focus on you. So be aware and ready for him. Do not be heedless of the Angel of Death, for he is not heedless of you!”

Advice of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib: “O mankind! What I fear for you the most is that you will have long hopes and follow your desires…”

Be from the children of the Hereafter; do not be from the children of this world.

“Today is for action; tomorrow, there will be no actions.”
