Social Engineering brings together thirteen text fragments from so-called phishing emails. Using speech synthesis, they are spoken, sung, and/or transformed into abstract textures. The result is a 36-minute language and sound collage devoted to the dark forces of phishing.

We are thrilled to release an exclusive mix by POiSON GiRL FRiEND, the beloved Tokyo-based DJ and singer whose iconic album, Melting Moment, was recently released on vinyl for the first time since its original CD release in 1992.

POiSON GiRL FRiEND is the alias of Noriko Sekiguchi, whose house and breakbeat infused pop and R&B productions were originally released in the '90s and have gained cult status within club circles and by aficionados of underground Japanese pop. Her dreamy, swooning music is a homecoming of sorts: she was born in Tokyo, raised in Brazil, educated in French schools, and discovered UK house music and club culture in London before returning to Japan, where she began releasing her own music and DJing.

Like the shapes of Sharp Freehand, which grace the cover, POiSON GiRL FRiEND's music is uniquely familiar—an amalgamation of specific influences that is rooted in an era and place, but is also timeless in its quality. This mix has a similar appeal, combining songs from the 90s with the present, and even includes an unreleased PGF track!

Mark Templeton is a Canadian media artist and the founder of Graphical, an audiovisual label dedicated to publishing his own musical and image based experiments. Mark’s audio compositions are constructed from reel-to-reel tape loops and sampled cassettes that are contrasted with contemporary sound techniques. In his published photobooks, he incorporates his own 35mm pictures and found images, focusing on intangible fantasies and realities. During his audiovisual performances, he utilizes digital instruments while projecting his own photographs, VHS footage, Super 8 film, and other sampled video.

Mark Templeton’s reinterpretation of outdated media as musical instruments makes him a compelling artist for the Faitiche label roster. For his debut on Faitiche, he browsed his old hard drives and invited Andrew Pekler to listen through and co-produce a selection of Mark’s unreleased works. The compositions act as a series of snapshots: a look back at a decade of archived sounds, re-envisioned and re-imaged for Faitiche. 

The album contains nine tracks that follow an AB song structure. Each piece begins with verse A, transitions into verse B, and then ends. This simple formula creates a dichotomy that is also present in Mark’s diptych photographs, featured in the artwork. Throughout the album, both juxtaposition and inherent connections are simultaneously at play. One way or another, Two Verses provides a beginner’s guide to Mark Templeton's highly idiosyncratic catalog.

Following the news last month of the first album in nine years by Jon Hassell, Ndeya Records is proud to share the second piece of music from Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume One). Whereas first track “Dreaming” utilised a repetitive, pulsating structure of lush texture, “Pastorale Vassant” deploys a different style with it’s skittering, insectoid, electronic gamelan sound. 

It has also recently been announced that to coincide with the release of the album, Jon will be making a rare appearance in New York City, reading excerpts from his forthcoming book The North And South Of You. The writing expands on some of the thinking that has underpinned his musical work for the last 40 years since he coined the term ‘Fourth World’ to describe his graceful interface of deep tradition with new technologies.

JON HASSELL ON “PASTORALE VASSANT”:
"Hillside Pastorale" in the Catalan dialect of Spain.

I was staying in Deya, on the island of Mallorca at Mati Klarwein's house where flocks of goats roamed in the hills at night, each one with a slightly different neck bell. One balmy Summer midnight I stayed awake to record this floating, constantly-changing "gamelan" that enters in the distant background halfway into the piece.

Asked to say something about the piece, I listened again and, sure enough - "Twittering Machine" - the title of a Paul Klee painting of 1922 popped into my mind. Although I knew his work for years and his Pedagogical Sketchbook was in my library, the "twittering" title was what stuck to me and I had only a vague memory of the painting. But when I looked at the painting while listening I was amazed at how they reflected off one another in a kind of unintended "tone-painting" way (where the picture sounds like the music and vice-versa).

This highlights the difference in "Listening to Pictures" as the title of the record and "listening to pictures" programatically (i.e., does the music paint the picture like the title?)
 
Another notable comparison here is how two possible angles on "listening" appear:
1) programmatically - where features of the "painting" are being evoked as in "tone painting." (Debussy - La Mer)
2) in the meaning of the title, Listening to Pictures, where vertical listening facilitates perception of shapes and a heightened consciousness of the entire audio spectrum which leads to your own "internal paintings."
