Simple assignment for this Junto: “Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it”
(the same every beginning of year, since 2012, way to go!) 

Did a piece in 3 parts: 

Part I: Melodic and generative, sort of sounds like a blend of a vibraphone and koto. A series of notes looping at different speeds and meeting and clashing incidentally.

Part II: Clattering events also occuring at varying speeds. 

Part III: a busier sequence of events.

That's about it!

The Assignment: Improvise successive layers, each time reversing the previous layer.

I used Korg MS2000 + Memory Man looper pedal, which is probably the easiest way to overdub on reversed audio. So you have different loops coming together, some reversed, some forward. 

I added a bit of ping pong delay and slap back echo sort of reverb to create a bit more space and then add some punch to the 'drums'.

for this week's assignment I used an old synth generative thing that was lying on the hard drive and created pulses and rhythms using a pattern repeat thing and different resonant filters

the idea was to give it a feel of smaller vs larger circles
and to leave many small details (representing the grain) coming through depending on which scale you look at or listen to the thing

not a piece for the ages
but it was fun to make

Sammie Ray Vaughan is probably the most unknown blues guitar player out there, really doesn't like to boast and show off, never plays a solo, keeps to himself. A model of modesty really. So little is known about him except for the occasional leaked recording...

So when he approached  me to perform a duet, I was a bit hesitant, you know, I'm like an ambient wanker and used to long form, erm, formless stuff. In this outfit I'm called The Exponential Trouble, and it's what I do, I add shit up until it messes the whole thing. 

Not sure we're ever gonna play together again, he's so elusive, Nevertheless, it was a fun session and here's a testament to it.

The work has been characterized as refreshingly kinetic, candid, self-replenishing, atmospheric and serene. It falls along the lines of drone, minimalist, sound art & ambient genres and undeniably subscribes to a DIY modus operandi.
