Secret of the Mummy's Womb

There's something intimate about improvising on someone else's creation, while at the same time not knowing much about them and enjoying no physical proximity. This was a very interesting and enjoyable experience.

For the second part of this project I chose to work with tigrinya's track 'An Old Rocking Chair'. I was very attracted to the processed textures of the music box, which I feel projected a sense of time passing on the surface of the object. So I focused on adding to that sense of time passing on a more 'macro' way by adding two different synth pads. The first picks out the A-E-D pattern in the track, at first following it quite faithfully, then slowly detaching and improvising. The second pad comes in halfway through the track, and is sharper in texture. 

I chose to quietly complement rather than come in heavily, and leave space for the beautiful micro textures of the object. Headphones recommended.

While working on this assignment, I found out once again how incredibly hard it is to do very little: Since music for meditation should allow for emptying the mind. It should not distract. And yet, there should be something there that helps one get into a spiritual, contemplative mood, let any thoughts pass and then, a state of non-thinking, of pure presence.

As a consequence, music for this purpose should/can have several properties:

Modal - which allows a stable, calm state of mind

Quietness and space - making sure the music doesn't overwhelm, neither by quantity nor by information overload

Far-eastern sound connotations - As in many "spiritual" purpose-made music releases, this seems to aid obtaining a certain mood, often by raga-type sounds, or sounds that get used in "puja" ceremonies in India (and heard in yoga/spiritual paraphernalia shops all over in places such as Rishikesh).


Since all of these are optional anyway - and are cliché-ridden on top of that -- I chose to simply use an electric guitar, for drone-like sounds, and after considering sitar-like moves, opted against those (for reasons of economy). Everything got recorded into Logic Pro, with generous helpings of delay and reverb, obviously.
I layered six guitar tracks (plus one track for the chime) on top of each other and tried for them not to get into each others' way too much, to allow for the composition to consist of very little information.

i'm so confused

Le Berger is the moniker for the artistic, conceptual & professional endeavors of Samuel Landry, hailing from Montreal.

Namely:
• Ambient textures & tonal ventures accomplished with primitive means and scarce source material
• Limited series conceptual art prints
• Commission work for interactive installations, one of a kind artwork & individual design projects
• Narrative & voice over (audio books, scientific narration, film, TV, commercial & others. French & English)
• Concept albums & mystical (yet whimsical) stories in sounds
• Openness to free association, collaborations and interesting projects, please do inquire

In most of these undertakings reside an ethos that goes deeper than aesthetic considerations. The creative process itself is considered in many ways as quintessential as its end product. Le Berger often times consciously restrains the resources, tools and options available; a method intended to excite resourcefulness and focus on human potential rather than a dependency upon expansive & expensive technologies offering what appears to be near endless possibilities.

There is a clear intent to create work that celebrates imperfections, values character and personality over the stale gimmicks of promotion. And then the sincere hope that it generates as penetrating an experience for the end receiver as it does for its creator.

The work has been characterized as refreshingly kinetic, candid, self-replenishing, atmospheric and serene. It falls along the lines of drone, minimalist, sound art & ambient genres and undeniably subscribes to a DIY modus operandi.
