After last month’s detour by Mexico for the Bluehost EP ‘We Need You’, Jerry Bouthier’s London-based label Continental hops across the channel to hook up with Middle for the release of his stunning debut single ‘In Your Way’.

Located by the Mediterranean Montpellier, France’s 8th city twinned with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona and Louisville USA, is famous for its huge student community and thriving nightlife. Part of the city’s bubbling electronic/dance scene 24 year-old Steve ‘Middle’ Stullgens is a talented musician who stands out from the lot for crafting… UK house. Surprisingly on the ball, fresh, innovative and damn funky, Middle’s compositions are not only unusual coming from a Frenchman, they’re also tastily groundbreaking not least for their musicality, inspired chord sequences and sonic dynamics.

A self-taught musician who started playing bass in punk bands at the age of twelve, Middle soon caught the programming bug and started to produce tunes in his bedroom, exploring genres until he eventually settled on house with a strong UK flavor a couple of years ago (“I love it cos it’s so groovy!”). After a string of free downloads which quickly attracted attention in Europe and as far as the US (his first track ‘Girl’ was snapped up by EDM.com and has clocked up 75,000 Soundcloud plays to date), Middle’s name’s soon getting bigger and bigger in the right circles, and deservedly so.

‘In Your Way’s no-nonsense original is a beautifully chiseled piece of futuristic house, both moving and griping at the same time, complete with euphoric peaks and enchanting melodic breakdowns (that vibraphone). Peppered by snippets of tweaked soulful vocals, synth chords and wooshes pulsate like heartbeats to the repetitive 4/4 injecting powerful tension to the dancefloor.

Remix-wise, Continental labelmates Reflex – coincidentally also From Montpellier – deliver a dreamy rewrite that’s still 4/4 but slower and sexier. Another local, DJ/producer Kaviar exercises his future beats magic and turn things around dramatically. Next Sergey Ledovskiy’s project Ledaux – a Russian based in San Francisco - takes the song into housey disco territory. To finish - other new French kid on the block - Aimeric Miriel AKA The Vein offers his own take on futuristic beats, soundtracky and vibey.

Originally from Melbourne, John Enston AKA JSquared is a talented dj/musician with a taste for all things groovy and a sharp ear for melody. After attending music College in Perth, John kicked off his recording career as a successful MC and beatmaker in the thriving Aussie hip-hop scene, writing and producing for major local artists, until he eventually switched to up-tempo party vibes after moving to Japan. 

A few years on, JSquared is making a name for himself churning out hot disco re-edits, yet there’s more to this Aussie dj than reworking other people’s recordings. As ‘RMB ME’ testifies he’s a fine songwriter/producer too. This latest collaboration with Japanese singer/musician/radio host Amy is a well thought out grower that addictively gets under your skin.

First on remix duties is Tokyo live band The Jazz Zodiac, four Nippon veterans from rap & funk heydays that have hit it off instantly with the Aussie dj and have invited him to join the band as keyboard player. Expect scratchin’ and more… Next pushing the emotional threshold further is Pastel, a gifted London-based French Haitian who delivers a futuristic rewrite that’s oh so ‘17! Always reliable Ledaux a Russian producer relocated in San Francisco expertly fuses energy and sentiment. Lastly Stockholm’s FINAL DJs applies his own racey, pumping gloss to this delicious song.

In her contribution to Bleep’s mix series, art-pop luminary Kate NV delivers a selection of tunes which provide a window into her singular musical style. The Russian artist proclaims these tracks to be “for those lazy days when you can’t get out of the bed cause you are tired and the sky is grey, but you are still in a good mood and don’t mind listening to some cheerful music while being in [a] horizontal position". Cuts from Annie Anxiety and Frank Zappa are among the selections here, but what’s really notable is how one can draw links between all of this music and the synthetic songcraft of NV’s own albums. From Talk Talk-esque post-punk to post-minimalist rhythm pieces, fourth world soundscapes to early synth composition, this is a delightful and fascinating hour of listening.
